quote:

“It’s unacceptable that the recent Supreme Court decisions have taken power away from the American voter, instead giving it to a select few of mega-billionaires,” Reid said on the Senate floor.

Reid said the vote would be held shortly on a proposed constitutional amendment from Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), S.J.Res. 19.

“Soon, Chairman [Pat] Leahy in the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Sen. Udall and Bennet’s constitutional amendment,” Reid said. “The Senate will vote on that legislation.”

quote:

Reid said Democrats are pushing for the vote to combat what he said is an effort by billionaires Charles and David Koch to “buy” the U.S. Senate this year. He said that effort is allowed in light of Supreme Court decision that prevents limitations on political spending, and said Congress must act to save democracy from the rich.

Absolutely in favor of this, though I could do without all the Koch brothers angst.

"Political Contributions, 1989 - 2914"

That's amazing! How did they estimate contributions for the next 900 years?

Of course it won't. It may pass the Senate, but no way it gets through the House.

Exactly. If you are going to remove money... remove all of it!

I'm not sure I would have an issue if all of it was removed. Give the candidates equal time in their states on radio and tv. They all get to mail out x amount of times per month.... free.

Just a thought. May be a bad one.

AS to this, to just apply this to the individual is not fair when you have huge corps and labor unions doing the same thing.

Won't even pass the senate. Needs 2/3rds to pass. This is a proposed constitutional amendment.

He didn't know that, I guarantee.

And Democrats aren't going to vote for it anyway. They aren't cutting off their cashcows. This is a perfect example of an issue used solely to convince low-IQ voters to pull a lever.

I assume the nuclear option would not apply here.

The hypocrisy in all this by Reid is he's playing to his base with all this Koch brothers BS to get more political contributions from them.

Their cash cows are not individuals. It's unions and corps. Does this bill address that?

Those charts are nice and all, but they don't really illustrate how the Koch brothers use their money to influence politics. They use a network of 501c4 organizations to launder the money so it's more difficult to trace back to them.

That said, I'm in strong favor of reigning in ALL political contributions no matter who or where it comes from.

Let's not forget how much money George Soros pumps into Dem candidates.

Of course I knew that. Why would you think I didn't? When I said "may" I implied there is a very, very small chance. I don't expect it to go anywhere, and would be surprised if it even reaches the Senate floor despite Reid's posturing.

Show vote. Reid is well aware this won't fly.
