Not fired and hired elsewhere..but left one team and coached another the next year bc they did well with the previous team.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a list

I wouldn't say it was better, but holmgren left the packers for more control in Seattle.

Thought the Patriots traded for Belichick?

ETA: Wasn't Gruden traded to Tampa too?

Gruden was actually traded for picks. Not sure if that counts or not

I think the Jets demanded compensation because of the bizarre situation and Tagliabue agreed. Not sure it was the same as the Raiders Bucs deal

Pick was exchanged. Close enough to a trade for me.

Bill Belichick is incorrect.

Fired from the Browns and never coached the Jets

So is there any instance of this??

Gruden might be considered one, but not technically true.

NFL coaching contracts are a lot different than college coaching contracts. They are held to their contracts. The team will fire them, but they are on the hook for the remainder.

So, your scenario rarely happens, unless the contract expires and the coach decides to move on. You do have some history of trades.

Yea, Belichick was the head coach of the browns from 1991-1995 and didn't take over the Pats until 2000.

Jets and Pats worked some hokey shite with Parcells too

quote:

Although Parcells had decided to leave New England, his contract did not allow him to coach anywhere else. The New York Jets sought Parcells as head coach and general manager after a 4–28 record under Rich Kotite. To circumvent Parcells' contractual obligations, the Jets hired Bill Belichick (then the No. 1 assistant to Parcells) as the Jets coach, and then hired Parcells in an "advisory" role. New England threatened legal action against Parcells and the Jets, but NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue brokered a deal between the two sides, with New England releasing Parcells from his contract and the Jets giving New England a third and fourth round pick that year, a second round pick the next year and a first round draft choice the year after that.

Parcells jumped from the Pats to the Jets without getting fired. He and Kraft had a disagreement so he bolted. I'm not sure it was an upgrade, but still.

And yeah, Belichick actually was the Jets coach (albeit briefly) due to the fallout of Parcells leaving while still under contract.

And there are only 32 jobs. The worst NFL HC job isn't that much worse than the best. You're always just a QB away.

Gruden was traded because he was still under contract with one season left and Davis didnt want to pay him

Gruden could have quit, waited a season and then taken another job but he wanted to go to Tampa so the trade was arranged

Belichick was the Jets coach for less than 24 hours. Doesn't count.
