Was Michael Sam drafted late because of the media?

If the media didn't make some huge spectacle about a gay guy being drafted, would he have been drafted earlier, or do you think there wasn't too much of a demand for a guy who can only rush the passer (against suspect competition)? Teams probably dropped him from their boards because of the distraction IMO.

Probably wouldn't have been drafted at all if not for the media pressure.

he was drafted late by the rams cause the rams were worried about not having enough pass rushers.

From everything I've read, he didn't have a great pro day, he was slow at the combine, and he can't drop back into coverage. That pretty much relegated him to a situational pass rusher.

don't the rams have some pretty damn good backup pass rushers as well?

Long and Quinn

Both much better than Sam.

I wouldn't doubt if Goddell put some pressure on the Rams to pick Sam. Remember, this wasn't the Rams ordinary pick in the 7th round. It wasn't even a pick that they received in a trade. This was a compensatory pick awarded by the NFL. This was essentially a pick that occurred after the 7th round was over.

And, I'm guessing Goddell picked St. Louis because of its proximity to Mizzou. He probably figured that Sam would be "more" welcomed by the St. Louis community because he played at Mizzou than any other place in the league -- with the possible exception of San Francisco. Of course, dealing with Jim Harbaugh would be a whole different can of worms.

I would be shocked if Goodell tried to pressure the Rams into drafting Sam.

one could argue they now have a log jam at the pass rushing position.
