A reenactment of satanic rituals known as a “black mass” that had been scheduled for Monday evening on the Harvard campus was abruptly canceled amid a chorus of condemnation from Catholic groups and university officials and students.

However, a scaled-down version of the event, without the original sponsorship of the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club, was apparently held late Monday by members of the New York-based Satanic Temple off campus, at the Hong Kong lounge in Harvard Square.

quote:

Hundreds of marchers proceeded from MIT to St. Paul Church for the holy hour, clutching rosary beads, crosses, and pictures of Jesus.

More than 1,500 people packed the church for the holy hour, including Drew Faust, Harvard president.

“Tonight, my friends, we gather in this moment of prayer, as a parish, a university community, to celebrate the greatest gift that God has ever extended to us, His son Jesus Christ,” said the Rev. Michael E. Drea, who led the holy hour prayers.

He said people of faith “all recognize the message of the Satanic black mass, they recognize it for what it is: an act of hatred . . . for the Catholic church.”

My how far Harvard has fallen to even consider this. From a university devoted to the Christianity faith to allowing satanic black masses on its campus. It's not even a shadow of a shadow of its former self.

to be fair, Levay-ist Satanism really has little/nothing to do with Christianity

Lets hope so.

And yet the mere name "black mass" kind of says it does stand in opposition to Catholicism if nothing else.

I don't see the big deal, why do Christians get so worked about things that have no effect on them?

I'd be more concerned if it didn't, because that would mean their faith and their love for God really wasn't very important to them, and so phony.

The enemy of God, identified as Satan in scripture, which is where this comes from, holding a black mass (clearly directed as an attack at the Catholic mass), at a university founded upon Christ is an attack on the Christian Faith without question. For a Christian to stand against that makes perfect sense, because their faith means something and they really believe. For a Christian to be indifferent to it absolutely does not make sense.

It confuses me as to why people worship satan. For satan to exist, god must exist as well which means you're basically willingly joining the losing team.

Idk. I'm Christian. Raised Catholic, now attend Episcopal services. The only thought I put into this was to say a prayer for the souls of those who participate. Those who participate either truly worship Satan and need prayers for salvation or they are mocking Christianity. If that's the case, so what? My God has been mocked many times before and it is on the souls of those who choose to do so.

True, and if you look at scripture, it was always the godly who stood against it, and spoke out.

Elijah was far from passive.

I condemn it when I speak of it but I recognize their legal right to do this in our country.

Nobody's arguing that they don't have the right. We aren't a theocracy. That being said, nobody says they aren't going to be unopposed either.

This is true. It actually has to do with not being invited to birthday parties as a kid.
