What if your Louisiana Surgeon is not a Medical Doctor?

Here we go again…
Louisiana Senate 568 and House Bill 1065 may be voted on this week and would allow optometrists (non-MDs, non-physicians, who did not go to medical school) to practice medicine and perform surgery without earning an MD or completing an ophthalmology residency!
Currently, 48 states do not allow this.
Burning a hole in the iris (peripheral iridotomy) or shooting a hole in the posterior lens capsule (YAG capsulotomy) with a laser (inside the eye) is an invasive surgical operation.

Dentists perform surgery everyday and didn't go to medical school or do a residency. Optometrists in Oklahoma have been doing these procedures for over 20 yrs. Their complication rates are no higher than MDs. Love the radio ad attacking Heitmeier, claiming he proposed it so he can line his pockets. How many MDs do you know who "line their pockets" with yags?

Dental school core science courses are the same as medical school. Dentist have 4 years of dental surgical training, specialist have more training. Many dentist and all dental specialities have residency programs.
