The Alex Smith trade isn't talked about as much but it's pretty unbelievable, and will help the 49ers for many years to come.

The 49ers traded Smith, who San Francisco was never going to willfully start in another game, for a second-round pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in 2014 that became a second-rounder once the Chiefs won eight games last season. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke started trading down with those picks, gaining extra selections, and that's where it gets interesting.

The 49ers ended up with five players from that trade, according to MMQB's Peter King. Here was the haul:

DE Tank Carradine, 2013 second round
LB Corey Lemonier, 2013 third round
LB Chris Borland, 2014 third round
RB Carlos Hyde, 2014 second round
WR Stevie Johnson, trade from Buffalo

Quite a haul. Oh and they are now using a better QB in Kaepernick.

They might be back-to-back SB champs right now if they never made that trade.

Last 2 regular seasons Alex Smith is 17-6-1.
Last 2 regular seasons Kaepernick is 17-6.

Pretty similar results.

Lemonier had first round talent (just underdeveloped with our sh*tty coaching staff)... he'll be a solid pro.

Would Kaep have had as much success as Smith in KC? I for one doubt it.

Kap sucks. Teams struggled at first with him because their offense changed with a running QB. Once they figure it out, his production has drastically dropped off.

Kaepernick still has a ways to go, but he has steadily improved each year. You have to remember the leap he has to make going from a strictly pistol offense at Nevada to a NFL pro-style.

He may never be a top five QB in the NFL, bet he has a much higher ceiling than A.Smith.

Very good trade by Trent Baalke as usual.

Right. That's why I'm saying Kaep hasn't proven to be a better QB than Smith.

Three.

Tank "Red-shirted" last year on the PUP list with Lattimore. Three of the 2014 picks will be "red-shirting" this year.
