Why do replays on ESPN from ~2006 look like they were filmed in 1996?

Any of you computer nerds/WAFB sports guys got a clue?

Is it that expensive to buy the storage space to keep them in HD quality? Doubtful.

I totally agree. I was watching a replay the other day and thought to myself that there is no way it looked like that live.

Because HD wasn't standard in '06 and you just don't remember how shitty it was or how good HD is now that you're so used to it 8 years later?

They probably weren't HD to begin with.

yeah 05'-07' was when channels were starting to switch over content. If Im not mistaken 1080p was just coming out then as well to the mainstream

HD was very widespread in 2006.

Tons of people had HD in 2006. ESPN 100% aired HD games in 2006

But not every feed was given to them in HD..I'm guessing...

Yes, just a strictly HD channel, similar to their 3d channel, and "HD" then could also encompass 480p as well I believe

What? Of course it was. It was and still is 720p.

You think ESPN was up-converting everything?

Why do replays of games from the 1970s look like they were filmed in the 1970s?

Some of those games might have aired on ESPNU, which wasn't HD back then. Or they just may be replaying a SD feed.

I don't recall when fox sports networks switched, but I think they all did at the same time.

I am more confused about why every person that calls in sounds like they're using a cellular plan from fricking 20 years ago. Hotels I have stayed in have technology that makes it sound like the person is in the room with you. I have to imagine this is possible with TV and radio.

No, but if it was an ESPN broadcast, ESPN sure as hell was.

Cox sports wasn't broadcasting full HD games for the Hornets two years ago. But the major players were.
