Some of you might not have seen this. I'm not a big horse racing guy but Secretariat fascinates me.

Secretariat was the only non-human to make SI's Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century list when it came out in 1999.

He was put down due to laminitis (hoof disease).

Thanks for the link. His Belmont run was one of the most dominant sports feats of all time.

Not sure if everyone knows this, but Secretariat's heart was 2 and 3/4 times larger than the average horse at an estimated 22 pounds.

Indeed it was. I'm not a horse racing enthusiast. Did he sire any colts that won any Triple Crown races?

He slightly underachieved as a sire, but he had a few solid horses including Lady's Secret (horse of the year in 1986) and Risen Star who won the Preakness and Belmont in 1988.

As beautiful an animal as ever walked this earth.

Secretariat was ALL THAT and then some. His Belmont still ranks for me as the greatest, most thrilling, most amazing sporting event I've ever witnessed.

Was just watching the triple crown races he won in 1973 during work today. The Belmont was the most dominant race he ever ran, but I think his Preakness win was more impressive. He went from last place on the inside before the first turn, all the way around the outside of the other horses, to first place early in the backstretch and never lost the lead after.

More impressive, his jockey NEVER had to use his whip to get that kind of effort. Secretariat just loved to run.

I can't remember, but didn't his times at each track set records at each one?

Also, his time at Belmont was a world record, and it is rumored that he set an unofficial world record for a mile and 3/4 race as recorded by hand timers, but since it wasn't an official race of that length, they never recorded it.

Simply the most graceful, powerful, beautiful horse to ever tread this planet.

Best track announcement ever, when he was pulling away from the field on the back stretch,...."He's moving like a tremendous machine!"

His heart was the secret to his power. It was described by someone as 'a huge engine.'

Think about this: Every horse we have seen win the Kentucky Derby since 1973 was slower than Secretariat.

quote:

On his way to a still-standing track record (1:592/5), Secretariat ran each quarter-mile segment faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were 251/5, 24, 234/5, 232/5, and 23. This means he was still accelerating as of the final quarter-mile of the race. No other horse had won the Derby in less than 2 minutes before, and it would not be accomplished again until Monarchos in 2001.
