What is the temp going to be like around the end of June? Will it be 95-100 like here, or cooler since it'll be in the "mountains". Going to be North of Athens and Southeast of Mena.

What's the situation with fishing in a national forest? Does this require Arkansas fishing license?

This is the first time I've ever camped with my kids and was wondering about some tips for taking a 6 and 8 year old. Like, anything you wished you had brought or glad you did?

Usually that time of year you'll see mid 80s to mid 90s.

Anyone 16 and older would have to have a fishing license. IIRC a 7 day nonresident license is less than $20

Bring thermacell and toilet paper. You can survive a couple days without everything else.

95 degrees in the woods isn't as bad as 95 in the concrete city. I wouldn't worry about the heat.

I'd imagine a fishing license is legally required, but I would check before I bought one.

Bring stuff for starting a fire, in case it's raining. Don't burn down a National Forest though, even though it is in Arkansas.

Catch something and cook it over a fire. Fish, lizard, snake, something. One of the fondest memories I have as a young boy was my grandfather starting a fire with a flare while we were squirrel hunting and cooking a squirrel on a stick over it in the middle of the woods. It was covered in hair and soot, but I can still taste it and remember his voice. He knew what he was doing.

Yea I was on the AGFC website and saw the three day was $11 and the 7 day was $17. It would just be me and the wife needing one and the 3 day would work.

Plan on buying a new one to go along with the one I use for hunting for more coverage, and tp goes with me everywhere. You only have to sacrifice your favorite pair of underwear or a sock once to make sure that never happens again.

I made a list of stuff to bring and it's three lines down the page worth of stuff. In my non-yuppie defense I wrote down EVERYTHING I could possibly think of even the no brainer stuff.

Fresh cooked squirrel is a fine meal when skinned and cooked within the same hour.

Watch the weather a lady that works with my wife lost her husband and 3 children

quote:

At least 20 people died in the floods (including at least six children),[7][8] and about 24 people were missing.[9] Many of the casualties were caused by a flood sweeping through a heavily populated campsite at the Albert Pike Recreational Area, at about 5:30 am on June 11.[2][5] The flood had caught campers by surprise while they slept in their tents,[10] and destroyed a number of cabins.[11]

The floods were caused by heavy rain on the evening of June 10 and the early morning of June 11 in the Ouachita National Forest, causing the Little Missouri and Caddo Rivers to rise at a rate of up to 8 feet (2.4 m) per hour. The Little Missouri peaked at over 23 feet (7.0 m) near Langley, up from its ordinary level of 3 feet (0.91 m). The floods affected camping sites around the rivers.[2][3][4][5] A flood of this size had not occurred in the area since records began in 1988. A local resident said none such had happened since May 1968, when the site "was not the popular camping spot it is today."[6] Warnings were issued in advance of the flooding; however, the warnings may not have been heard due to the remoteness of the affected areas.[2]

That was the boy scout tragedy from a few years ago? I remember hearing about that. It's a worry on my mind, but not to the point where I dont wanna go. Thanks for the tip though. I'll keep checking it in the weeks leading up to the trip. Its not gonna be until the end of June.

No the Boy Scout happened a different year. This was just a bunch of random people/families camping enjoying the outdoors.

The Boy Scouts survived but got stranded by high water when it flooded before anyone could react.

Flash floods are a mother and can happen in an instant.

If your driving up to the campsite bring at least one pop-up canopy. Two if you have them. Get out of the sun or rain.

Also a tarp spread out on the ground and staked down with tent stakes if nice for in front of your tent and cooking area. Especially if it is wet weather. We set up a canopy right in front of the tent with tarp underneath. This allows you to get in and out of tent with socks on and not track in leaves and dirt. If it looks like rain the canopy goes over the tent for extra protection.

Set the tent up on high ground. Water running under a tent ruins the trip.

Fire starter, match light charcoal and Dutch oven, lighter fluid, wind proof lighter, a shovel, paper towels, pop tarts, flashlights and extra batteries, glow sticks, a net, off, sunscreen, tongs to grab hot lid off of Dutch oven and other hot things, jar for lightning bugs, redbull so you can keep up with them, and allow them to do or eat one thing you normally wouldn't. Have fun and enjoy
