Which is a better performance of a role? (total immersion into the character)

These have to be 2 of my favorite performances ever. You feel like they are actual existing beings, as oppose to actors portraying characters for entertainment.

I read that DDL stayed completely in character and voice 24/7 as Bill the Butcher for the entire time the movie was in production even when he was not on set. Once they were done, he completely shaved his head so that he could feel clean again after sporting Bill's greasy style. It's weird to see him talking in his normal British accent after seeing this film.

In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about 6 weeks. During this seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character.

Ledger stole his character from Tom Waits and I can prove it. So DDL is the answer.

Doesn't he do that for every character?

Also, I don't meant to take anything away from Ledger, but it has to be a little easier to get yourself into a character when you get to wear face paint the whole time

Interesting.

It still doesn't take away from the quality of the performance for this discussions purposes though imo.

I'm honestly not sure which performance I prefer.
I kinda lean toward DDL.

Yes. Dude is top notch.
Very few actors and actresses have that much dedication.

Ledger's Joker is the most overrated performance of all time.

I think it does. There is a difference between creating a character and mimicking someone you admire. Jmho

1. You can't "steal" a character from a person that actually was like that when they were shite faced. If Waits had been like that during a performance in a movie then yeah you could say he stole it. But during the time of that interview Waits was fricked up dude. And by the look of your avi you should know that.

2. Actors shadow people all the time to help with getting a performance down. I don't think Waits has ever killed anyone, held a city hostage, or cut a smile into his face but Ledger could have easily watched Waits mannerisms and thought that would be great for his take on a character that had already been created.

3. If you condemn Ledger for using Waits' drunken mannerisms for The Joker then you're going to need to do it for Depp with Jack Sparrow and countless other performances throughout movie history.

Before I opened the thread, DDL popped into my head and I smiled when I saw the pic. Dude was so good, Scorsese said that there were things that he added impromptu that weren't even in the script and it was so perfect they just rolled with it.

This was one of them.
When the politician tells Bill "You don't know what you've done to yourself."
Then Bill taps his glass eye with the end of his knife.
