quote:

Travis Sanders has been mixing drinks for 15 years.
"I tell people all the time, I tell my wife all the time," he says, "there's no place I'd rather be than behind the bar."

He's an instructor at the Crescent City School of Bartending. He also tends bar at New Orleans' Hotel Monteleone and at private parties and weddings.

I have a beverage catering company," he tells us. "In a party, the most I've ever made was a thousand dollars."

When we show him an invoice from Walter Reed's Sept. 2012 fundraiser at the Castine Center in Mandeville, Sanders says, "Get out of here! Wait, really? No…"

It's how much Reed, the St Tammany Parish District Attorney, paid his son Steven's company, Liquid Bread, LLC, to handle bar services at his fundraiser - $29,400.

"That's not possible," Sanders says. "29 grand? $29,400? That's ridiculous. That's half of my salary in a year."

We obtained the Castine Center's entire folder on the event, in which they detail and document the caterer, the band and the production companies, and even list the bartenders.

That folder has no mention of Steven Reed or his company, Liquid Bread.

Especially interesting considering Reed hasn't actually faced an opponent in an election in many years...the exact number escapes me...yet all this money being shelled out for campaign events.

This is getting deeper, From the New Orleans Advocate:

Birthday party dinner described as planning for Reed’s fundraising event

Walter Reed spent nearly $3,000 at the Dakota restaurant on March 19, 2005, an expense that is explained on his campaign finance report with a single word: “meeting.”

But a framed menu, topped with the words “Happy Birthday Claire,” tells a different story about the reason for the gathering.

Claire Bradley kept the framed menu — a gift from Reed — as a memento of the party that the St. Tammany Parish district attorney threw for her 46th birthday. Bradley, who was Claire Ursin before she resumed using her maiden name, says she dated Reed for years and was briefly engaged to him. She recalls the party as a high point early in their relationship, which she said ended for good in late 2012.

The menu, decorated with three tiny hearts, lists the date along with the bill of fare. About 40 guests started with classic shrimp remoulade on garlic-grilled foccacia and wild mushroom bisque and truffled wild mushroom sauté. The main course was pan-seared filet mignon topped with Maine lobster and lobster sabayon.

With the total bill coming to $2,887.59 and 40 guests, that works out to about to $72 a person.

If it goes without proper investigation...even moreso.

The conflict of interest is. However the $29,400 bar tab seems pretty cheap for a packed out Castine Center. I mean by comparison my wedding bar tab was $11,500 for ~200 people 15 years ago.

I think the biggest problem is no paper trail from the actual event. Maybe there was a separate invoice for the booze.

I was friends with John Mamoulide's son when his dad was Jefferson DA. He used to throw a big annual picnic for the public at some park. Free food, free beer, thousands of people there. Must have cost a ton. No telling who was footing the bill.

I think Reed is crooked as hell, but a bar bill tgat size isn't unheard of. I don't think it's against the law to hire your family members companies for campaign parties. Eye Browse's expert need to start booking larger parties.

You would be wrong. Generally you can't do it BUT there is an exception if your family member normal job is in that area and you are paying a equivalent wage to what they would normally get for providing that service. So if your daughter is an accountant you can pay her to be the campaign's accountant as long as you don't pay more than what is customary for accounting services.

So what was his son paid? Does he normally throw huge parties for others?

Oh, I didn't realize the $29K bill was just for serving (and not for also providing) alcohol.

Let's say the Castine Center can hold 1,000 people.

Just beer, probably $10/head. 1000 X 10 X 1.2 (tip) = $12,000

Beer plus well brands, probably $15/head. $18,000

Beer plus premium brands, probably $20/head. $24,000

Beer plus well brands plus hors d'oeuvre. $25/head. $30,000

You can see where I'm going. The cost of a party can add up pretty quickly depending on what you want.

he didnt even serve anyone. he "set up", and there is no explanation for that

the servers were DA staff members who basically had to work for free or face termination

I think I heard Steve didn't have the proper permit for said job as well-catering, maybe.

Once these things come to light it's Pandora's Box aferwards. Ruh-roh.
