** BILL APPROVED 232 to 186 -Select House Benghazi Committee Bill HR567

Since January of 2013 (yes, 2013) a bill from Rep. Frank Wolf designated as HR36 has been gathering co-sponsor signatures and was up to a total of 187 . This is the piece of legislation that two victims' family members have spoken in favor of and the bill which so many have been frustratingly urging Boehner to allow to be voted on.
I have posted numerous times that I felt the bill called for too many members overall (19) and too many pre-designated members by virtue of their various committee power seats (12 of the 19 would have been automatic selections.) I also felt the 90-day work window the bill called for was way too short.
A few days ago, after Boehner finally came out in support of such legislation, I expressed a hope that HR 36 would either be amended or that a new bill would be written over the weekend to completely replace it.
The latter has happened!
HR36 is off the table.
The new Benghazi Select Committee bill is HR 567 and its sponsor is Pete Sessions of Texas, who ironically was one of the 45 Republican holdouts on HR36.
The new bill, as many of you have heard, calls for 12 members instead of 19, no "automatic" members, and the 90 day time window is gone. The resolution as it passed the Rules Committee a couple of hours ago is open-ended.
Here is the complete text of the new bill, which is expected to be voted on tomorrow, Thursday.

Looks like there will be one hour of debate on Thursday with a vote likely between 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM. House floor schedules are very fluid so anything could happen to change this.
It will be interesting to see if any House Dems cross over on the Subject of Benghazi, as 26 did today on the IRS Special Counsel vote and as 6 did today on the Lois Lerner contempt vote.
I have a feeling any Dem crossing over on the Benghazi vote will be sticking his/her neck out within the party far more than those crossing over today, so think it could be a straight-line party vote, with the possibility of one Republican voting with the Dems.
We know Gowdy is in as Chairman, so am looking forward to Boehner's other 6 picks and Pelosi's 5. Will they go with "big names" or the toughest fighters? (Pulling for Jim Jordan to be on the GOP side.) Would like to see Boehner and Pelosi agree to keep both Issa and Cummings OFF the committee to avoid embarassing both parties with their constant sniping.

I liked how Gowdy referred to this Committee investigation as a trial yesterday. That was a nice Freudian slip.

Light at the end of the tunnel.
I loved in when this Country came together on 9-11. I hope and pray that our citizenry will rise up and DEMAND that our leaders....LEAD...instead of lie and manipulate.
thanks NH.

To put that reference into context:
"Asked about that possibility Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Gowdy said the length of his work would depend on the administration’s level of cooperation.
“It would be shame on us if we intentionally dragged this out for political expediency,” said Gowdy, the special committee’s chairman. “On the other hand, if an administration is slow-walking document production I can’t end a trial simply because the defense won’t cooperate.”
Gowdy is a former prosecutor who often, and I do mean often, speaks in courtroom jargon. He did not say "this" trial - he said "a trial" - making the point that a committee chairman, like a prosecutor, manages an investigation, just as a prosecutor manages a trial, i.e., he can't , and won't, let the tail wag the dog.

Gowdy on MSNBC Mornin Joe...wow...makes me want to restore them back to my available channels list!
Gowdy is fearless. Bet they never even challenged him in a disrespectful way; because they knew what they'd get in return.

If anyone is watching, there are some votes starting now on HR 576. Don't get confused, as the Benghazi bill is HR 567. 567 votes are coming up after the various votes on 576. Got that?

The preliminary Select Benghazi Committee vote has been passed. It provides for one more hour of debate before the final vote is taken. The first hour of debate, earlier, was to present the bill from the Rules Committee to the full House. This second hour of debate will precede the final vote later today.

The one-hour final debate starts right now (4:15 PM EST) on C-Span
Boehner up first. Each party has 30 minutes. Louise Slaughter managing the Dems floor time. She has started out using up part of those valuable 30 minutes by talking about the RNCC using Benghazi to raise campaign funds. Unreal.

Elijah Cummings now has the floor. Hopefully, this will be the last time I have to listen to him on the subject of Benghazi. If Pelosi names him to the committee, it will be solely to disrupt the proceedings. He's still attacking Issa in his last gasp.

Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) just called Tyrone Woods "Tyrell Woods" in the same sentence that he suggested that voting for this committee would dishonor the victims. (Seems to me taking a minute to get the man's name right would honor him as well.)

So he's a lock?

I dislike Cummings because with the new information of his involvement in the Tea Party IRS targeting it's rediculous that he didn't abstain from being on that committee. He is nothing but a blowhard that is there to obstruct.
Seriously Maryland, this is the best guy you can come up with? I get that you are a liberal state and all, but I have no doubt that there will be enough evidence that he should resign by the end of the tea party deal. Not saying anyone will do anything about it, but the information is already there.

He would have been under HR36, the initial Select Committee bill, but not under this new one. With only 5 slots, I can't imagine him getting one, precisely because he would likely be disruptive, and the Dems don't need that.
eta to add "maybe I missed your intent" ( as in tongue-in-cheek) sorry
