Has there been a more disappointing MLB draft than 08 concerning college players

Hitters in particular.

Here's the top college players taken in the top 10 in that draft:

Pedro Alvarez
Brian Matusz
Buster Posey
Gordon Beckham
Aaron Crow
Jason Castro

Pedro kind of worked out, Buster worked out, and Castro is a starter- albeit a very average one. Crow didn't sign. Matusz and Beckham are gigantic busts. I thought for sure Beckham would be a great 2b and I thought the O's really reached on Matusz.

The next few college players off the board were supposed to be great too:

Justin Smoak
Jemile Weeks
Brett Wallace
David Cooper
Ike Davis
Andrew Cashner
Josh Fields
Ryan Perry
Reese Havens
Allan Dykstra
Christian Friedrich
Daniel Schlereth
Carlos Gutierrez

Out of this group, the guys I thought would probably pan out and be great were Weeks, Davis, Cashner, and Fields. I thought Cashner and Fields would be terrific closers. Cashner is coming around this year as a great starter, though. Weeks and Davis obviously busted. Though Davis might do well with the new change of scenery.

I thought Smoak had a chance to be great, but he was extremely streaky in college, so that turned me off of him. I thought Wallace would at least mash somewhere in a 1b or DH role. He was probably the biggest bust IMO. Wallace bashed everywhere he went.

The rest of this group (Friedrich, Dykstra, Schlereth, Gutierrez, Havens, Perry) I thought about 1-2 guys would be regular starters out of. Looks like all of them busted, though some still have a shot to make an impact as a late bloomer.

I remember this draft class as being heralded as the most college talent in a long time. It's disappointed as far as I'm concerned.

Since we're not seeing as many college hitters drafted in the past few years, maybe the bats fooled a lot of these scouts and the new bats are exposing players like Wallace, Weeks, and Havens as merely average college players.

Why only kind of? He's an all-star/silver slugger.

I know each team is required to have one, but he was still an All-star last year.

Crow didn't sign.

Been a pretty solid reliever. Maybe not exactly what was projected, but still solid.

Both are in their 6th year on an MLB squad, and Matusz actually had a pretty decent year last year. Disappointing on both fronts, no doubt, but "gigantic bust" seems a little much.

The fact that the majority of the list has contributed at the MLB level seems pretty ok to me. Granted, looking at it relative to other years might help, but the MLB draft is a notorious crapshoot. Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't seem that bad to be honest.

I just see him fizzling out like Mark Reynolds. Certainly not someone you take #2 in the draft.

That's nice. I don't judge a player by if they make the AS squad since every team must have one and it's a popularity contest. Castro has been nothing above average every year except last year.

No doubt. That's why the only thing I said was he didnt' sign.

True, I guess it seems bad to me because this was hyped to be another 2005-type draft.

Oh gosh, Mr. Cleo Baseball at it again with his fortune telling.

What the frick are you talking about? He's had 66 home runs with ~770 OPS as a THIRD BASEMAN the past two seasons.

You're a clown poster, bro. You realize that fans are allowed to make predictions, right? Would you feel better if I prefaced it with (IMO, I could be wrong but, etc. etc. )?

Who gives a frick? Mark Reynolds had 4 seasons with a .770+ OPS and 126 HRs.

You're lying to yourself if you think that scouts and the Pirates didn't think Pedro would be a better hitter than he currently is.

Talking about people drafted 6 years ago isn't a prediction, it's talking in hindsight.

Right, but he took issue with me stating my opinion that his career will probably be close to Mark Reynolds.

That's the point, dude. That's really good.

It's not Adrian Beltre with the defense and power combo, or David Wright with the overall game, but those guys are elite level type players.

90% of MLB teams would take ~ .770 OPS and 30+ home runs from third base.

I'm not disagreeing with that. That's why i said he kind of worked out. He is solid, but he certainly isn't as good as they expected him to be. We're on the same page, you're just pissed at my wording or you're looking for a reason to be offended.

Good to see you know as little about MLB as you do LSU football

Ugh this just reminds me how much of a failure Kyle Skipworth was for the Marlins, who was only one pick behind Posey if I recall.

Shooter Hunt was the 31st pick, don't know that he made it out of Single-A.

What, in particular, are you disagreeable with on this? Or do you just like to be a dick?

was looking into some other recent drafts...2005 was a hell of a first round

Justin Upton
Alex Gordon
Ryan Zimmerman
Ryan Braun
Ricky Romero
Troy Tulowitski
Cameron Maybin (still has potential)
McCutchen
Jay Bruce
Jacoby Ellsbury
Matt Garza
Colby Rasmus
Clay Bucholz

eta 11 could become the GOAT: Cole, Bauer, Bundy, Archie Bradley, Baez, Springer, Jose Fernandez, Cron, Sonny Gray, Wong, Gilmartin, Jackie Bradley Jr
