Destiny has $500 million budget, huge gamble by Activision

Destiny could be the most-expensive video game ever created, with Activision Blizzard planning to spend $500 million on its development and promotion.
The figure comes courtesy of CEO Bobby Kotick at last week's Milken conference (viaReuters) and dwarfs the amount spent on most games, and even Hollywood films.
It's worth noting this number doesn't solely cover development, but all the other expenses associated with manufacturing a title, including "marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs".

Between 15 and 16 million copies of the $60 game would likely have to be bought in order for this to happen, according to analysts. It's a big ask for an unproven franchise but, thankfully, there's some serious pedigree behind it.

You can count my copy in that 15-16 million. There is no game on the horizon that I am more pumped up about.

Video game budgets these days are truly insane.

Some game journalist that has played Destiny said it was very meh at this point.
Wish I could find the Reddit post about it.

I want to like the game, but it looks very blah to me.

Some chick on Kotaku thought it was meh, but she prefaced it that her 30-minute demo was very limited in what she could do.
Not trying to defend Bungie, but I'll wait for more to come out before I make a judgement on the game

Beta will be soon so no reason to listen to anything until then.

Maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but it seems we went from "woot" to "meh" rather quickly on this game.

I wonder what the split is between development costs and promotion costs. I suppose the budget doesn't account for the fact that there will be significant post-launch content costs as well

Will I be able to play this on my WiiU?

One site guestimated the development portion was/is around 150-200 million.

Supposedly it plays better on the WiiU than the PS4. Let me find the link.

Please do.
I really want to be excited, but I know how overhyped these games can get.

Because everything about next gen has been underwhelming so far.

I threw a $5 pre-order down on it to get a closed Beta key from Gamestop. Closed Beta should be released sometime in June

This is the first time since the Super Nintendo rolled out that I've put off being an early adopter. I don't feel like I'm missing anything yet.

500 million is just too much to spend on a video game

About half of it is advertising costs I would imagine.
