When Hitting ‘Find My iPhone’ Takes You to a Thief’s Doorstep

quote:

With smartphone theft rampant, apps like Find My iPhone offer a new option for those desperate to recover their devices, allowing victims like Ms. Maguire to act when the police will not. But the emergence of this kind of do-it-yourself justice — an unintended result of the proliferation of GPS tracking apps — has stirred worries among law enforcement officials that people are putting themselves in danger, taking disproportionate risks for the sake of an easily replaced item.

This quote really stood out to me:

quote:

“Let police officers take care of it. We have backup, guns, radio, jackets — all that stuff civilians don’t have.”

In what fricked up police state does this pig live in where civilians don't have backup (friends), guns, radios and jackets?

Cops would never go get your stolen phone, so I don't know what this guy is saying. And even if they went there, they're lazy enough to take the person's word for it anyways.

Too busy giving speeding tickets to actually protect someone's property.

I don't think I would go knock on someones door to recover a stolen phone.

Still in LC, still working industrial sales. Have a baby daughter due in July. From what I remember, you were working for the boyfriends dad?

The article overall doesn't make me mad, but the quote I highlighted does.

agreed. even if the value of the phone would make it a felony theft (in FL >$300)...

I just don't understand why this article even needed to be written. some people have sound judgment, others do not. if having this technology causes you to get yourself hurt or killed or to commit a crime, so be it.

ETA: cctiger, no I worked for my dad. bf and I got engaged, moved to fl, broke up, I still live in fl, work at the hospital. CONGRATS!!!!!

In the same make believe world where he pretends the cops will use anything he listed in an effort to recover a stolen cell phone even after the location is locked down.

it can also lead to violence, particularly because some people arm themselves — hammers are popular — while hunting for their stolen phones.

It's the principle of the thing. What, we're supposed to say "Oh, okay, they can keep it and I'll buy another one this time, and the next time, and the next. Thank you, Mr. Officer"?

People don't realize the value of the information they have stored on their devices. Well worth it in some cases.

it just points out morons that go overboard with the app... no intelligent person (hopefully) would put themselves in that situation. at that point you just say that it's time for a new phone. it does suck that the police don't care though.

The one mentioned in the story gaf. He rounded up a bunch of his off duty homies to go find his. Didn't use the law as the story is requesting non-coppers do.

That's what irked me.
