Are big car audio systems making a comeback?

I know that big 12" speakers booming bass never really "left" and they've always been around on some level, but.....
I remember, the early 90's or so, it was all the rage - everyone and their brother was buying amps, and speakers, and tricking out mom's mini-van....you couldnt go to Taco Bell without hearing at least 4 different trucks rattling your windows
...then, it kinda went away, like a fad, it was less and less prevalent, even amongst the kids
but lately, it's like 1991 all over again, anywhere I drive...downtown, to the office, back to the house...every day, some kid has this huge pair of 15" woofers, shaking the bumper off my truck
Are we seeing a resurgence in the car audio market again?

God, I hope not. I never understood the point of having your trunk sound like a metal box full of baseball bats.

Haven't noticed this.
I want to upgrade sound in my vehicle, but everyone I talk to just assumes I want to rattle windows with terrible music. That I don't give a shite about bass is a concept they can't comprehend.

stock systems got WAY better
Thats why.
I had two Kicker 15"s in HS. I had to double the screws on my license plate because it started to bend upwards from the vibrations.
And I was listening to Phish
ETA:
I had a jeep grand cherokee FWIW and my subs completely took up my trunk. I had no trunk in an SUV
God I was such a misguided youth

trends
- 2din > 1din head units now
- 'pandora inside' bullshite..cant believe honda advertises a new car with 'pandora support' on their tv ads
- bluetooth phone-i-fied
- usb, CD-R, CD, sirrius and FM HD losing ground
- app radio mirroring or extending your phone/gps becoming the WAY TO GO
the appradio i put in our sequoia doesnt even have FM HD or a CD player.

Honestly I think it had something to do with the import scene of the late 90's and 2000's and the fall off of the minitruck
now it just seems to be making a circle back

Building speaker boxes was my thing back in high school (late 90's). Now I ask high schoolers about who has the most bump and they look at me like I'm crazy.

no, downtown Austin
for at least 4 out of the last 5 days, I have been driving home or somewhere for work...and all I hear is the truck next to me just cranking out some very serious bass

Nothing like the smell of fresh cut mdf and wood glue

back in 1982 i had just installed a '2 sided sanyo' cassette deck in my 76 monte carlo along with some jensen 6x9 speakers.
i was showing out to my friends at school in the parking lot one morning and one of my friends asked me to 'crank it up' and i started the car.
i still bear the scars of the ridicule received for the rest of that year.

Bass doesn't have to mean a 10 or 12 inch woofer you know.

Plenty of cars now come with some decent factory systems.
My car has two 8's in the trunk and over a 1000 watts to all the speakers, straight from the factory

I finished high school in 98 and it was very prevalent. When did it "go away"??

I know that, they don't seem to. I guess I don't blame them, considering 90% of car audio purchases are likely bass-centric or iphone connection.

love/hate
it was a closeout (appradio2) so i got it for a song.
however i have to use a rather expensive piece of software (ARliberator $29 play store) to get an 'unlocked' experience.
then there's the 'parking brake nanny state bypass' doo-dad i bought off ebay, the special smartPort/MHL USB cable thingie to make it work with Nexus4 & 5..and struggles with android OS updates and ARliberator updates causing problems.
if i wasnt a tech weenie and keep things running smoothly my wife would have taken an ax to it by now

To the OP, I've noticed it, too. I realize that factory systems have gotten much better, but I can tell the difference between that and souped-up systems. I fricking hate it. You have no right to disrupt my awesome music with your deafening, bullshite music. And I really don't understand the desire to have the same level of volume in your car as would be present in a bar. That's completely unnecessary and quite dangerous as I'm sure it's distracting as hell to the driver.
Instead of inspection sticker and seat belt checkpoints, the cops should focus their efforts on citing these assholes.
