I was reading about the guy who is being sued for for $32M for uploading UFC fights to torrent websites for others to download.

LINK

It got me thinking, what benefit do people get out of doing something like this? Let's take the case of uploading movies. When I purchase a movie, the last thing I'm thinking about doing is ripping it to my computer and uploading it to a torrent site so that others can enjoy the benefits of what I payed for for free. I get no profit or anything in return, and I risk getting sued for enough money to force me into a lifetime of debt.

Why do people do this?

It's a sharing community, is it not? Perhaps people get better availability or speeds or something the more they share.

I don't do it, so I'm just guessing here.

To challenge the MPAA to evolve their outmoded business paradigm.

The MPAA is still stuck in the 90s, and they want nothing more than to see continued consumer use of physical media. They're horribly naive and exceptionally resistant to the notion of digital distribution.

People want convenience. When the MPAA offers a unified digital distribution system that's intuitive and monetarily pragmatic, the frequency with which people torrent films will decline.

Some people enjoy ripping things. I am guessing they do programs because they are harder to crack and the guys are proud of what they did.

I am extremely glad people upload solutions manuals. To you guys

yep, I can think of a movie or album, and in a matter of minutes I can be watching/listening to it. I have netflix, amazon prime, and hulu plus, but they don't have everything.

Keep in mind that other countries don't care about torrenting, so sites are usually hosted there. It's all about money.

I don't think you understand how web hosting works..

you're clearly a noob.

most private trackers require a certain amount of upload to download and the ability to get to more torrents is to put more up of your own.

The one I use goes by upload:download ratio. You don't have to upload anything, just as long as you continue to seed(share) the content for a particular time, or until you've achieved a 1:1 ratio.
