quote:

First, the Southerners were considerably more certain of which states are their own. While the top few Midwest states barely pulled 80 percent of the vote, nearly 90 percent of respondents identified Georgia and Alabama as Southern, and more than 80 percent placed Mississippi and Louisiana in the South. South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and North Carolina all garnered above 60 percent.

Southerners seem remarkably content to mess with Texas, giving it 57 percent support. Virginia, Arkansas and Kentucky hovered at about 50 percent.

So, who are these 1 in 10 that don't think Georgia and/or Alabama are not part of the South?

Also, does anyone know what’s going on with Missouri? Mostly excluded from the South and Midwest, it appears to be the geographic equivalent of the last kid picked during dodgeball.

Florida? It is more like a suburb of New York and New Jersey.

I never considered the Carolinas to be considered 'South', but I definitely wouldn't even consider Virginia/WV in the mix.

GA, AL, MS, SC, NC, KY, TN, LA, Ark (pushing it), VA.

That is "The South". Texas is not the south. Florida is not the south.

I've always personally just considered those states sitting on the Gulf, and not including the Carolinas, or anything else north of Shreveport.

VA is getting up there geographically, but historically it's gotta be included.

What's your logic behind NC? It is definitely the south.

The white people in Memphis seems to be a mixture of the Midwest and the Deep South. I'd say Tennessee is the rough border these days.

Missouri is the Midwest, IMO.

No one wants Kentucky or West Virginia.
