She had a 60% approval rating when W beat her, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.

As I am watching, it sounds like we may differ on a good deal of topics, but she sounds like one funny cool arse woman. And considering she was a drunk, I think we would have gotten along.

Decent yes, she was being groomed for bigger things. Selling the lottery as a way to fund education and the turning around and using it in the general fund was her demise. She was only a single term gov as compared to the current Perry who has been in office for like 14 years.

She won because her opponent had an epic foot in his mouth moment.

Her fluke win was because tPOS (R) challenger told women they should relax and enjoy the rape. Also, her predecessor (R) Clements was embroiled in the SMU football scandal.
She did have personality, which was something lacking among most of the candidates during that time. I always thought she was kinda brash for a Baylor grad.
She was even further left than most TX Dems at that time.

I met her in Austin once a long time ago. She was a friend of a friend. Really sharp lady, a total smartass and had me laughing my arse off. I enjoyed talking to her.

You people don't remember your Texas history. Ann Richards was a Socialist. She invented "Robin Hood". Stealing money from suburban school districts and giving it to inner city ghetto schools.
A lot of suburban schools had problems meeting their payments on new construction since it was timed on loans given current tax rates. The suburbs (full of liberals) got outraged. They voted for Bush when Ann ran for re-election but they would have voted for anyone with a pulse to get rid of Ann.
She was, of course, a lesbian. I warned you people about lesbians. But do you listen?

Interesting. I started this thread because of an HBO special on her. Even though the man she ran against was an idiot, I still found it odd that such a liberal woman was able to win the Texas Governor race.
Dont get how a woman with her roots could grow up so liberal.

These rumors had as much credibility as the ones that always said Troy Aikman was gay. Both were started by one person with an ulterior motive.
