"Small ball" style in the NBA
Posted on 4/27/14 at 9:13 pm

Its becoming more and more apparent that NBA teams would rather play a small ball style of play, rather than a traditional NBA set with a true C,PF, SF, SG, and PG. Teams are willing to sacrifice size for speed.
These are the lineups that teams have been regularly running in the playoffs so far:
Portland
- Lillard
- Mo Williams
-Matthews
- Batum
- Aldridge
Houston
- Beverly
- Lin
- Harden
- Parsons
- Howard
Golden St
- Curry
- Thompson
- Iggy
- Green
- Lee
OKC
- Westbrook
- Reggie Jackson
- Thabo
- KD
- Serge
Toronto
- Lowry
- Vasquez
- DeRozan
- Ross / Patterson
- Johnson / Jonas
Brooklyn
- DWill
- Livingston
- Pierce
- Joe Johnson
- KG
Dallas
- Calderon
- Ellis
- Carter / Marion
- Dirk
- Dalembert
- And at times, you have Devin Harris / Crowder in the game in the game as well.
And majority of the other playoffs teams are running it as well. In fact, the only teams that dont play small ball seems to be the Grizzlies and the Wizards. And thats because both of those teams have 2 legitimate bigs.
And even if a team will still play with 2 "post players" , 1 of them is a stretch 4 that isnt really a post player. And they will have 2 PGs on the floor at the same time.
Chicago doesnt play like this as much as other teams, but still do it at times. And most of the time have 2 PGs on the floor with Augustin and Hinrich, and then have Butler, Dunleavy / Gibson, and Noah. When Gibson plays its not really a small ball, but there are 2 PGs.
So, why is this? Is it because of the evolution of wing players / stretch 4? And the evolution of the PG spot? Not a days, PGs are 6'5 and average 7 rebs a game.
Or is it because of the lack of legit NBA bigs? I dont really believe that there are a lack of legit bigs. I just think that other positions have evolved and you need to run to keep up. And, now a days most bigs can play 20ft away from the basket. With the exception of a few guys like Dwight, Griffin, Jordan, etc. There are a lot of 7'0 guys that have a solid mid range game.
Teams would rather sacrifice defense for offense?
And do you like this new style, fast paced brand of basketball? Or do you want to see them go back to the old school style that now seems to be obsolete in the NBA?
What do you think?

I believe an wnba regulation size ball will increase scoring.

So, why is this?
2 reasons
1. the removal addition of the hand check bans mean that driving is easier
2. driving and 3s are efficient shots. "small" ball is more likely to lead to driving and 3s. unless you have a shaq, the post is not efficient

Well I was embellishing a little with 7. But there are a lot of PGs that are very good rebounders.
Stop taking everything so literal. You know what point I was trying to make.

Rockets rolling out the Twin Towers the last two games.

This is the 1st game Asik is starting. Last game, he played 27minutes, a little bit more than half the game. Lin, Harden, Beverly, Dwight, and Parsons all played more minutes. And Asik has only averaged 20mpg this year.

I think it's because there aren't many big arse centers with good feet and the moves to punish the smaller guys down low.
I might compare it to the smothering offensive lines of the past couple years to the smaller, tough, athletic lines that are having success now.
Or maybe I'm drunk

Most of the players you named are power forwards.
He means no dominant centers.
And there aren't any.
Dwight is the closest thing to a dominant center and his game as regressed instead of progressed over the last few years

Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter also send greetings to OP

Did I ever say teams never play with 2 guys down low? No. They still do it some.
And Spurs are like the Bulls when it comes to this. Duncan is the consistent post presence, and Splitter gets liek 29mpg, but then Diaw gets over 20mpg. And the Spurs sometimes roll with Parker, Manu, Green / Beli, Kawhi, and Duncan.
Nor did I bash a team that plays small ball or plays a more traditional style. This is just something that has caught my eye a lot during the playoffs.
Hell, TBird you basically agreed and gave a reason why teams are playing more "small ball".

I'm not tryna fight with you man
I was just naming more quality big men, is all.
The talent level in the NBA today is nasty across the board. It's insane.
Yeah, SA is more of a hybrid team. It's kind of been their M.O. for years. They'll beat you big or small if the defense proves to be one-dimensional.

I know man.
And I never said that the league is lacking talented bigs. In my OP i went against that. And, even though I like Splitter and think he fits in well with the Spurs, Im not sure I would classify him as a quality big. He fits in well with that the Spurs need him to do though. And, like all of Pop coached teams, he plays his role.
And yea Pops always has a stretch 4 type guy on his squad that plays in the 20mpg range.
And, IMO, the Spurs are the only team that can match up with anyone in the NBA. They can play up tempo, fast paced "small ball" type of bball, but they also can play at a slower paced with half court sets and beat you inside. IMO, they are the only team that can do that.

You must have watched the 30 for 30 on Detroit and the after show where they discussed in length how the nba now is a point guard league
