What films you love were "homages" to lesser known (at least in the US) films?

* inspired by some discussion in the Tarantino thread.

What are some of your favorite films that were inspired by either foreign works or lesser known American works? And have you seen the original work and how do they compare?

Two I can think of:

A Fistful of Dollars - I've read was inspired by a Kurosawa work.

The Warriors - I think was inspired by a Greek play by Xenophon?

I haven't seen (or read) the original works in either of these though.

Well let's go with the movie that inspired this thread; Reservoir Dogs inspired by City on Fire

The Departed remake of Infernal Affairs.

I prefer both of the newer versions.

Not just inspired, Fistful of Dollars is basically Kurosawa's film Yojimbo shot as a western. I believe he actually sued Leone and got a fair portion of money made from the film.

The magnificent seven is basically a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai as a western.

Kurosawa's Hidden Kingdom also heavily influenced Star Wars.

Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is based on Macbeth.

And The Lion King is at least loosely based on Hamlet.

Kurosawa supposedly claimed he got more money from the lawsuit than from Yojimbo

The ultimate irony being that Yojimbo is itself a ripoff of Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest

And it is magnificent.

In that vein, A Bug's Life is a homage to Seven Samurai.

The Here's Johnny scene in the Shining was inspired by a silent film.
Star Wars famously pulls from The Hidden Fortress.

Literally a shot for shot copy. Many spaghetti westerns simply took the core story lines from all of his films and just switched samarai with cowboys.
