Low standards hurt the average/slightly above average than anyone else?

I got through high school, college, and law school with nothing more than a nightly cram session. No real hard work involved.
Now I find myself without a "real" job and no prospects to really speak of. I realize that that the top 10% of any field(law, business, sports etc) will always have a place and that I could have worked hard to be in that % but I kept going forward despite my lack of effort.
I'm not blaming anyone but myself for MY predicament but 40 years ago I either would have developed a better work habit or flunked out and been sent to menial labor.
Shouldn't the COST of further education not be an issue but the standards to access that education be raised even higher than it currently is?

So what happened once you got into the law field? Did you get a position and then suck at it?

Not if people like you and I want that education. I was always the same way. Put off studying, cram, pass. There are standards for higher learning and it's at a different level ex. med school. For most jobs if you have a degree you can learn and become good at that job.

I'm the same way too. I didn't study at all in high school and I graduated with a pretty decent gpa (enough to have college completely covered). I'm graduating from college magna cum laude in a few weeks and I haven't put forth much more effort than high school. I don't feel like I've truly earned much at this point.

Did you think coasting through law school would be sufficient to get a good job?

But do people like u and I deserve that education?
Put me in front of a standardized test and I'll score n the top 95%. On a day to day basis though(a semester long class or work) and my result is mediocre.
I never learned the lesson that hard work is success. Mediocre results always gave me success at least till I left the academia lifestyle.

My gut tells me that it's not really low standards that fricked you over, but rather indecisiveness in deciding what's most important to you.
People who are very successful in particular fields of the business world are usually motivated by a deep fear of not being successful. If you are naturally interested in things that are, well, more interesting, then you will naturally tend to slack when confronted with boring stuff.
I suppose higher bars placed at the gateways of socially successful fields might have made you come to clearer decisions earlier in your life about what's really important to you, but it also seems silly to complain about having too many open choices .... not that I haven't done that before myself.

Going into my third year before the economy tanked and based on how life had turned out previously I thought I at least could land a decent job.
I'm hard pressed to say that I wouldn't have been better being flunked out after my 1st year of law school as previous years were so used to.

So you're saying you're a shitty lawyer?

Based on in-court results for friends that were desperate for a layer I'm actually "undefeated"( criminal, succession, etc etc)
But if you are referring to the actual time needed to spend in a law library, research case law, and do that day after day after day than yes I am a shitty lawyer.
ETA I'm like Crusie in a few good men. I'm great at spending 30 mins arguing the superficial facts of why the case should go my way but if it needs more than that I'm fricked.

Seems to me that you have a shitty work ethic. Either your parents were too soft on you or you are just lazy. Time to grow up or say frick it and be a beach bum.

I agree ETA but higher standards would have made me face this choice in my teens/20s and not 30s ETA2 and also not incurring 75Gs in student loan debt.
