I have a Tag Heuer Auquaracer Automatic that I got for my anniversary 3 years ago. I plan on keeping it forever, as it's my first nice watch and it was an anniversary present. My question is- when should I take it in to be serviced? I know that if you're going to re-sell it, then it should be serviced very couple of years, but since I plan on keeping it, can I hold off for another couple of years, or until it stops keeping good time?

Right now, it's an every day wear and it keeps almost perfect time, maybe runs a minute fast every month or so. It's in great condition and could use a good cleaning, but if I can save the $400-500 to have it serviced, I'd like to.

I've had mine serviced once since 2006. Same watch you have.

I have my watches serviced when they stop working or every 15 years. Whichever comes first. Servicing is a money grab. Now don't get me wrong, they detail the frick out of it but that's not a big deal for me.

Rule of thumb is 5 years but it could go a good bit longer(like double) without needing it if everything is running fine. But like getting an oil change at a certain interval for preventative reasons go with 5 years if you need that to sleep at night.

The stuff that I've read was 3-5 years is what's recommended for mechanical watches and that you can actually go much longer and still have the watch keep accurate time. It might eventually start to damage the watch. Also, time is more important than use because the oils themselves dry up. I think.

My Rolex is getting ready to get serviced. 6 years old and was pushed into getting serviced when I dropped it on the travertine floor the other day. Shattered the crystal...

Mine is over 10 years old and never serviced. I won't do it until it keeps abysmal time.

"maybe runs a minute fast every month"

How and why you tolerate this I just don't know.
You're obviously the type to let things go until it's just too damn late. Well, it serves you right-that watch is ruined for good.

every 5 years is usually good on a mechanical watch... since you wear it regularly it should stay well lubricated and might need the service less often..

of course you should send it in for servicing if it starts gaining or losing significant time..

When I notice that it's running about 5 minutes fast, I set it back. That probably happens twice a year, so that's roughly a minute a month. I'm not putting my watch up against a countdown timer every day to see if the seconds match up.
