A comet has hit/meteor has hit/ volcanic eruptions/disease rampant. All technology is gone, no infrastructure, no foodstuffs being mass manufactured, no medical care, it's like it was before 2000 BC.

How long until society advances to the place it is now. Or would it ever?

It depends on if I'm alive or not. If I'm still breathing, humanity has a darn good chance.

I think it really matter which 500,000 we have left.

Are we talking about 500,000 from all walks of life, or 500,000 people from southern Cambodia or something?

I think for the purposes of the exercise we should assume that the 500,000 left are an exact crosssection of taday's population.

You need to drop that 500k down to 1000 for this to get interesting.

With 500k, you have one of every type of person - doctors, engineers, accountants, construction, carpenters, etc. The loss of knowledge wouldn't be an issue.

At 1000 people, you wouldn't have everyone covered, so some knowledge would go "poof".

As long as there are a handful of Germans left then everything should be fine.

With the level of abstraction that's been achieved in every facet of society, this is unlikely.

Do you know how your computer works on an atomic level?

500,000 across the globe would be relatively sparse and with no communication, no infrastructure, there would be no exchange of ideas.

But, let's take it down to 200,000 worldwide. All walks of life.

But with 500,000 spread across the planet, it would make it interesting.
