Wondering for the wife. Thinking of a quick trip to Mexico.

If you don't file the paperwork to change the name within the first year of the name change then you have to pay the full fee and and basically go through the whole pass port process all over again

Depends. Do you plan on her coming back with you? If so, it's a grand idea. If you are going to knock her off in a "diving accident" for the insurance money (seems to be popular in the last few years) then don't bother.

Looks like a new one is needed. Thanks OT

Not sure if the name change is actually required to travel, but I'd make sure the name on her tickets and everything else is in the same form as whatever her passport has. If she's changed the name on her credit cards that might make it harder too.

Been married for almost ten years and my wife still uses her passport with her maiden name until it expires next year. Wasn't worth paying for a new one to me just to update her name. She just continues to travel under her maiden name whenever a passport is required. Not that big of a deal.

Is one immediately needed? Tons of people leave the country for their honeymoon, and I seriously doubt that most of them get their passports changed in that time.

That's why the woman makes sure the travel plans are still in her maiden name. She won't be able to change her name until after the honeymoon if she goes right after the wedding.
Too many women are so excited to take their new name, they don't think of this and book the trip under their new name. And then are in for an unpleasant shock when they are not able to board because their passport/id doesn't match the name on the tickets.

I don't understand. Is Mexico in the kitchen?

My wife changed hers but it was expiring within a year so she needed it done. I booked her ticket under her maiden name though which she needed some paperwork in order to leave the country. Overall wasn't a big deal. So no it's not needed but in order to not have to carry extra paperwork just make sure tickets are booked under the name on the passport she will use

Just make sure the ticket and the passport match.

Just make sure her previous and NOT the new surname is on the plane ticket, and you´re OK.

Probably a good idea. If she is using the married name; be sure to do a name change with Social Security before taxes are filed with the married name. We had three young couples with W-2s in married name but had not changed the last name with SS, causing an initial rejection for e-file.

Need pics of wife to answer.

I have been filing with my wife's ss# and name on it still in her maiden name. Her w-2 has my last name. E-file every year for the past 7 years without a problem. She has never changed her ss card.
