I have the opportunity to work as a Sr. Financial Analyst for a Fortune 500 technology company, but I haven't taken the job yet. I will be starting my part-time MBA at a Top 5 school this Fall and will take 3 years to complete. My goal after my MBA is to work in a boutique investment bank/VC/PE firm on the west coast that specializes in high-tech. My original background is engineering and I will have 7 years of work experience in the tech industry by the time I graduate with my MBA.

Is this a realistic path to get into IB/PE, which is my ultimate goal? I am 32 by the way, so I am getting a late start here.

I tell everyone that ask, its possible to go into IB from a part time program but its is WAY more difficult than a FT because of how they hire. Which is based on internships. If you are serious about going into this do a FT program because you need the internship.

Also its going to suck to be an analyst at an IB firm at 35. Hell I don't even know if thats possible.

Well he would be an associate I would assume. I think you would be more valued by a consulting company and you could still do PE.

Do I have to be an analyst? By the time I complete my MBA, I would have 7 years of work experience as an engineer (4 in the energy industry + 3 in the tech industry) plus 3 years as a Sr Corporate Financial Analyst (tech industry), which equals 10 years of total experience along with my MBA. Why couldn't I start as an associate? Also I am not thinking bulge bracket or anything, just a boutique firm on the west coast specializing in the tech industry.

Well that point is moot because the hiring process will still be the same. Smaller boutique firms may not have the same hiring process but they will possibly look for people with IB experience already.

Read this. Its ultra competitive in IB, no matter the size.

LINK

I'll say it one more time, if you REALLY want to do IB and work terrible hours doing mind numbing work, then go to FT.

Thanks for the link. Going to a FT program is really not an option due to personal reasons (loss of 2 yrs of income) and my age. Moreover I have done the hard work to get into a top part-time program and can't start over. I have got to do the best of my current situation.

If not IB, how about getting a job an investing/M&A arm of a major tech company in the Bay Area - Google (Google Capital/Ventures, Intel, Cisco....I know most of these companies have a division that focuses on investing in early stage start ups and/or acquiring them. With my work experience and the business school learnings, is such a career move possible?

Know someone who went the Ivy --> IB route for Barclays in NY. Said it was the most miserable experience of his life. 80-90 hours a week and they didn't give two shits whether you stuck around or not because there is so much competition to get in.

Doesn't directly answer your question, but just thought I'd chime in with that

What are some typical career paths in the Corporate Finance world? Do they typically work something like this:

Finanical Analyst --> Sr Finanical Analyst --> Controller/Finance Manager --> Director --> Sr Director --> VP of Finance --> CFO?

He means professional MBA. And they are quite highly regarded. I'm graduating from UT in a professional program and recruited by the same employers as the FT.

I guess it is just semantics. The program I got into is ranked Top 5 in the part-time MBA rankings and in the Top 8 in the full-time MBA rankings. The faculty is the same and all my classes are held at the main campus. It is just that my classes are in the evenings/weekends. We even get to fully use the career services from the first day, which I believe is not allowed at some part-time programs for fear of diluting their full-time programs. The only thing I can't do that full-time students can is do an internship (unless I quit my job).

At my age and where I am in my career, I felt that the ROI getting an MBA part-time from a good school while continuing to work full-time was much higher than quitting my job for two years and getting a full-time MBA.
