Uniform changes and recruiting

Often times the reason given for uniform changes is for recruiting purposes. Obviously there is a lot more going on than that. Winning tradition and placing kids in the NFL is a bigger draw. But looking at Rivals top ten 2014 recruiting classes it seems like a tradition of winning and a tradition of uniform go hand in hand.

Florida State
Tennessee
Texas A&M
Georgia
Florida
Auburn
USC
Have any of these teams changed their uniforms in the last 40 years?
The schools that seem to change their uniform every year are either trying to wipe the slate clean and create a winning identity with aesthetics or have fallen prey to our culture's idiom that new is always better.

UGA wore the black uniforms, FSU will wear the maroon pants that Burt Reynolds donated, Tennessee and A&M had mad some changes too. As for whole sale changes, you are correct most of these teams only make uniform changes for special occasions.

Other than alternates, not really. Our uniforms redesign in 2012 was based on our late 70s uniform striping. We even busted out the White helmets. It's a more modern look, but hardly changed
UT hasn't changed much either honestly but they also have used an alternate now and again.

I heard an ESPN commentator say the other day that the more these schools change their uniforms the more he likes the ones that never change.
I agree.

Many of those schools have made subtle changes in recent years whether is be numerals and shoulder striping at LSU or changes to helmet and sleeve stripes at Ohio State. But, for the most part, the changes are minor and don't completely overhaul the brand.
When it comes to the major players in college football, recruits don't make their decisions based on a uniform. I would argue that most wouldn't do that even at the mid-major level. I think what it IS successful in doing is getting a recruit to "notice" a school and give consideration. It gets a school on a recruit's list, but the coaches still have to sell the player on why they should go there.

I do think that Oregon has gained a lot more fans because of their uniform change. I am a teacher in Texas and I have talked to several kids who like Oregon. They said that it was the uniform that first attracted them to Oregon, then the style of play really sold them. I can remember as a military brat, I pulled for the teams that had the flasher unis like FSU and when UVA switched to the navy blue jerseys.

I see what you're saying I think. These schools that change their uniforms every other day don't have the advantages lsu has in facilities, proven track record of putting kids in the nfl etc. so they have to do something to remain relevant to potential recruits.

Help them become recognize able by being flashy. The uniforms themselves aren't all what sold these recruits.

Not in the case of Oregon. They have top notch facilities when recruits get to campus and they have been winning a hell of a lot. The uniforms may put them on the radar, but I promise you it's everything else that is selling.

Maybe so. I think what I was getting at was that winning or at least a tradition of winning really outdraws the cosmetic appeal.
The brand of a team is the experience. If that experience is a winning tradition then the logo (uniform) will be a symbol of that experience and no one (including fans) will want it changed. If your brand (or experience of the product on the field) sucks, you are always trying to rebrand or rejuvenate the product. They would never put it so crassly but it is if their pitch is "we know we sucked last year and the year before, but this a new team, a new experience ...and we've got the uniforms to prove it".
I'm thinking of a restaurant chain like Arby's who have changed their logo twice in a year, where as McDonald's has barely changed at all. It's an illusion really as it's still the same experience. The new cosmetic wears off, as it's still a roast beef sandwich and we would rather have a burger.
ETA : I think Oregon is a unique situation with Nike and would be an exception. They have made "change" itself a tradition.

Texas A&M changes theirs all the time. Ones from Cotton Bowl had no stripes on jerseys & little thin stripes on pants. Very plain compared to last couple of years.
The ones they wore the last couple of years are similar to ones they wore in the 70's. They change every 5 or 6 years.

You must be thinking of a different school. We redesigned in 2012 to go back to a 70s retro look and are now using both a maroon and a white helmet (we wore whites in the 70s). We've also begun mixing and matching the two colors of helmets, jerseys, and pants instead of having one home combo and one road combo. But change every 5-6 years? I'm not sure where you get that from.

I like that the picture you chose has two freshmen on the field for LSU and both ended up i playing in the NFL for a long time. 
I just looked at the two-deep from that game. A lot of future NFLers on there.
