Just drove by a group of young kids probably 8 to 10 years old asking for donations on South Claiborne in New Orleans. It's got me to thinking how laws are very strict as far as speeding and safety in school zones. The amount of signage and manpower that is dedicated to school zone safety is quite considerable. It is very understandable as small children that are not completely aware of their surroundings yet are trying to cross the street.

The safety issues alone seem like it would make it illegal for kids that young to be in traffic darting around cars. I mean if school zones are such a big deal, why wouldn't this be a big deal too?

This is a great point. In general the pedestrian habits on that downtown stretch of Claiborne are shocking. You regularly see people walking with kids or even strollers just haphazardly crossing midblock. Considering it's a 45 mph speed zone it's amazing they don't have a fatality a week.

They could make it illegal but it wouldn't be enforced.

I don't really care about the legality of this, but it's definitely getting out of control.

I pretty much always stop and donate to kids selling lemonade or baked goods or doing car washes.
But I'm not going to reinforce the behavior of getting $$ for doing nothing.

It's safe for the kids. Their moms are sitting on the neutral ground facebooking on their Obama phones while Dad is working hard at work.
It's all good

It's 35. And maybe like 1/500 drivers actually obey that school zone by Harney. I've actually had cars honk at me for driving through that school zone

Certain groups have car washes while others stand on street corners with signs and buckets. Don't be a racist. Just give the kids some money.

I hate the message the a-hole adults give these kids. If you want something, beg for it.

What happened to car washes and garage sales. Why can't they sell world's finest chocolates and pop corn tins
