Costco, Celtic and SAIF Credit Union want to join the city of Baton Rouge.

The three businesses are located just south of the city limits in the area that is being proposed for the new city of St. George. The Metro Council is set to approve the annexation at the April 23 meeting. All three property owners petitioned for annexation, and both city police and fire departments, who will now protect those areas, confirmed the annexation would not increase operational or capital costs, according to city-parish documents. Only properties adjacent to the city line can be annexed.

Annexations are generally initiated by a petition of the landowners. But with larger swaths of land, state law permits annexation to be decided by an election that is called by the municipality after a petition of the landowners. Baton Rouge officials admitted in February they were in talks with Costco, Celtic and LSU about possible annexations, stemming from the looming possibility of the incorporation of St. George. William Daniel, chief administrative officer for Mayor-President Kip Holden, said at the time that many businesses are concerned about the financial uncertainty of being a part of a new city.

St. George leaders are trying to collect 18,000 signatures on a petition to put the city proposal to a vote. The organizers have declined to disclose their signature counts; however they said in January that they had about 10,000.

This annexation has nothing to do with those companies being afraid of a new town and everything to do with Baton Rouge not wanting to lose tax dollars to a "new" town of St. George.

Actually, it looks like that's exactly what happened.

Read the link.

ETA: Never mind, here is the quote from one of the businessmen:
quote:

“As far as taxes, it’s tough to say what will happen if you’re in St. George. We’d rather deal with the known than the unknown.”

Yep, Costco has Economic Development incentive deals with the State and EBRP. They would be stupid not to do this. I would think Celtic has similar incentives on the line also.

There's also been talk of LSU South & L'Auberge following suit. That could make things verrrry interesting.

Beginning of the end. All the rednecks in shenandoah might just have to make it final and move to livingston or ascension.

And fricking LOL at whomever in this thread said this had nothing to do with St. George. It has everything to do with St. George. When LSU finishes carving the land to L'Auberge and L'Auberge makes it final, St. George is dead, vote or not.

Do they? I thought they stopped that stuff? I know that was the reasoning given for not providing incentive to the Juban development.

Costco Wholesale is moving to Baton Rouge, thanks to a $7 million incentive deal that city-parish officials said was essential to lure the superstore to the city.

Costco is expected to open a 150,000-square-foot store by next April at the former Coca-Cola bottling facility on Dawnadele Avenue. Company officials say it would provide jobs for 250 employees, made up of half full-time and half part-time positions.

The Metro Council voted 10-1 at its meeting Wednesday to support the deal proposed by Mayor-President Kip Holden’s administration. Councilman Ryan Heck, whose district encompasses the area proposed for the superstore, cast the sole vote against the deal; Councilwoman Donna Collins-Lewis did not attend the meeting.
