Any OT'ers went through the ABC program to learn a trade? If so, how was it?

Do it. It's a great program. Treat it like a job and work to be the best in your class. It'll pay off.

My friend is a director there and he's always sharing amazing success stories. Young men who completed the welding program with $50k in the bank 18. Months out of high school.

Electrical and instrumentation is a joke. It's just a money grab for all of the contractors. I used to correct my teachers when I was younger. I heard it's getting better, but nowhere near what an ITI can offer

It's a great program. They'll teach you to weld, but you have to be willing to put in the work. My brother went through the crane program. He has nothing but good to say about it. I can't speak for any of the other programs as I am not familiar with them.

Doesn't Louisiana Technical College offer cheap welding classes?

I'm not sure about LTC, but if you can get one of the contractors who are affiliated with ABC to sponsor you, I believe you only have to come out of pocket with about $100 a semester. And I believe some contractors may sponsor a student without the student even working for them.

I was going to do the welding classes there after Katrina just for the hell of it. They were free for about 2 years IIRC

If you know someone that works for any of the big contractors (Performance, Cajun, Turner) they often "sponsor" guys and at least pay tuition. I know several folks that have worked as laborers while doing it and they had all there tuition, supplies, and a little extra added in...

This. Have a family member that was a teacher that retired at one of the trade schools. He was telling me that young guys that finished his welding class that went to work on pipelines are making over 100K a year up north.
