So my 9 year old is in his 4th year of baseball (AL spring, will be playing AL summer)and now has the option of joining a "practice" summer basketball league with some other of his friends. True basketball league isnt until the fall. Have any of you avoided 2 sports at once? or suck it up if he really wants to.

I miss the days when kids were able to play at least 3 different sports in a year.

Why not? If that's what he wants

Not a bad time to start teaching him time management skills.

my son plays a few months worth of two sports, basketball and fall baseball.

he enjoys it so i make every effort to accommodate. what was fun is when the other two kids are also doing sports

we would be looking at 2 games/1 practice a week for baseball and 1 game/1 practice a week for basketball. Saturdays would be baseball practice then basketball game.

I've talked to the parent of a kid that's my son's age who usually has at least two sports going on at the same time, sometimes three. From what they've told me it and it can be overwhelming to both the kid and the rest of the family. This is especially true of younger siblings who already had a good portion of their time taken up by finding things to do at the ballpark (or gym) and now find themselves having even more of their time dedicated to their sibling's activity. It can lead to jealously issues popping up. But despite all this they've been keeping this pace up for at least the last 3 or 4 years. We all joke about "living" at the ballpark.... it's not a joke to these people though.

How horrible. Hand him a XBOX controller instead.

Best time to try it is in the summer. It can be tough during school. But many (including El Es Shu Jr) do it.

My son is in baseball right now along with karate and tumbling. Two sports isn't too much.

Don't fall into the "travel ball" trap. In my experience, about half of the kids who go that route with any sport burn out on it and don't want to play by high school. Get out in the yard/driveway with him and have fun.

Depends on the kid. If he wants to play and you can afford it, then do it.

meh. I used to go straight from football practice to tae kwon do 5 days a week. I'd change in the car on the way there. finish that them get home, do homework, eat, go to bed.

No problem with it until one conflicts with the other and you can't keep up your commitment to one of the teams. At that point, it's forcing you or your son to determine which is more important and it also sends a message to his teammates that there are other teams more important to him than that team. To me, it's more a question of can you be 100% committed to both without having to choose between the two. Practices and games. Doesn't matter.

It depends on if the family can handle the time commitment. More and more studies are showing that focusing on single sports is contributing to more youth injuries, so varying the sports is best.

Just make sure your kid is doing plenty of "play" as well. Kids build a great deal of their foundational strength by just climbing, jumping, etc.

We keep our summer sports light so our kids can romp, play, and explore the woods vs. staying sports focused.

The issue is more and more of the sports "recomend" a "year round commitment" especially when it comes to high school. Football will have the season, then spring practice, then "conditioning" and 7 on 7, etc. Baseball will have the high school season and then the summer American Legion type leagues. Soccer will have the high school season which is pretty much in the winter and then "club ball" in the fall and spring and summer 7 on 7 or 6 on 6 leagues. Even swimming I think has offseason stuff at places like Crawfish Aquatics. Not ultra familar with basketball but I think the AAU stuff goes on during off seasons.
