I really enjoyed this article... I think the author nailed it re: BR

quote:

In my subsequent semesters, I've come to see the city beyond its landmark bridge and college bars. I've met several bands, proving admired musicians were more beyond the mic. I've played pool in smoky bars and thrifted for pieces no mall can offer. I judged a poetry slam last week, moved by the power of local poets as they shared their life struggles. There's a mural project funded by local businesses and inspired by the progressive art community to paint the town all sorts of colors.

Yes, maybe our culture isn't dancing around our streets throughout the year, but it shows itself loudly in the spring sun.

Perhaps it's unfair to compare Baton Rouge to New Orleans. As I'm slowly discovering, Baton Rouge has its own unique brand of underground culture. In a city that seems mainstream, our indie scene is so underground that its whisper faintly reaches the average LSU student. Discovering the Capitol as a cultural center requires investigation beyond the LSU gates, but seeing Baton Rouge's soul has transformed my view of my current home.

Louisiana's heart of SEC sports and politics has room for culture, and sometimes it takes some Southern warmth to resuscitate its beat.

What's going on in here?

Are we saying nice things about Baton Rouge?

About time, I just hope the OT haters don't find out.

The article was extremely well written. Even with the writers clear bend toward "coolness" the article wasnt overwritten. As someone who isnt as. "Hipster" as the writer, but generally enjoys that culture, I can relate to her take. However, there was a bit to much hipster vs. establishment crap. The citys not cool because not everyone is into poetry slams.... Eh. There is a fine art community here, but its not the mainstream. Thats they way any good art community is. It quietly affects the mainstream.

The words were mainstream and indie, and she did nail it. BR does have a market for blues, food, and art, but the vast majority is extremely mainstream conservative, with almost everything revolving or pointing to LSU, and I think the point wasn't an us versus them argument, but that there's a place for both, and there is. You can have crazy good food, a vibrant original music scene, enjoy art and the like and still be a an upper echelon LSU fan at the same time. It's OK to do so.

Blues Fest was a great time.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the music. Dr. John was great. The crowd size/density was just right. No hassle getting there or parking. And that renovated green space between the Old State Capitol and the River Center made for a great main stage venue.

Couldn't make it. I had an event I had to attend for work, but my friends I was supposed to meet there said they had a blast. I so wish I could have gone. Glad you had a good time urinetrouble.

Dear Aryanna:

I've been doing this and going to these since 75. Your revelation isn't anything new.

Jesus. You would think BR is Vanillaville.
