WR Cody Latimer Report

Not all great WRs are taken in the first rounds. Unfortunately the word is out on this cat and he might even go before the Saints #91. Seven teams have lined up private workouts for him.
6'2" 215 lbs
4.44 forty
Latimer, who is still recovering from the injury and therefore did not participate in shuttle drills or even the positional workout, was able to run the 40-yard dash, clocking in at an impressive 4.44, according to a report from NFL.com. Latimer, who led all receivers with 23 reps of 225 pounds at the Combine, also recorded an impressive 39-inch vertical jump on Wednesday. A total of 19 teams attended the workout with the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers represented by general managers John Idzik and Tom Telesco, according to the report. Latimer is currently rated as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 24 overall receiver and a 5th round prospect. He's a bit raw as a route-runner but the physical talent is certainly there to warrant development.

Scouting Report
STRENGTHS: Possesses thick, athletic-looking frame and an impressive speed/agility combination that enable him to separate consistently as a route-runner, and extend plays after the catch both in space and on contact. Flashes soft hands and good coordination when asked to extend and pluck the ball off his frame***, and positions his body nicely when adjusting to balls thrown off stride.
Flashes the physicality and initial quickness to develop into a receiver who could beat press coverage at the next level, and is a willing blocker in the running game with room to improve his technique there.
WEAKNESSES: Occasional concentration issues leading to drops. Though Latimer exhibits burst and hip-sink to separate out of cuts, he seems to lack a second gear when asked to pull away vertically and may struggle to consistently threaten the top of the defense. As a route-runner, lacks precision at times as he'll round off his cuts, and he needs to get better at working his way back to the ball on hitches and comeback routes.
Wide receiver and defensive back for head coach Daniel Parks at Jefferson Township High School ... first team all-conference selection hauled in 42 catches for 722 yards and six touchdowns in addition to 372 rushing yards, six TDs and 27 carries in just eight games as a senior ... made 89 tackles, four interceptions (one score) and forced two fumbles ... on special teams, returned 13 kickoffs for 450 yards and four touchdowns and added one punt return TD ... rated the No. 19 prospect in Ohio and the No. 49 wide receiver nationally by Rivals.com ... rated the top wide receiver in Ohio by OhioVarsity.com ... caught 45 passes for 960 yards and eight scores as a junior ... rushed for 260 yards on 24 attempts and six touchdowns ... led the team with 95 tackles ... two-year football letter winner also played basketball and baseball ... honor roll student ... parents are Tonya and Robert Dunson ... born on Oct. 10, 1992, Cody Derek Latimer is a general studies major.

Why does your summary list his high school stats but not his college stats?

They are a good gauge for the type of speed a guy has, but poor in determining how fast a guy plays in pads and how fast he plays actual football.
You watch guys line up for a 40 yard dash and watch them line up at the line and you see a big difference in the stance. Most lose that jump that makes their 40s look good.

reminds me that I've always thought they should do two 40s at the Combine. The second in full uni & pads starting from a football stance. I think there would be a lot of interesting data comparing the two. Like Dri Archer... 4.26 but the dude is 5'8" 173 lbs. How much does the weight slow him down versus Mike Evans 4.53 at 6'5" 231 lbs?

Exactly. I'm actually in favor of not even doing the workouts without pads. They play in pads so the workouts should be done in pads.
Everything is skewed at the combine because from running to jumping to leaping to running the shuttle, etc. it would all be affected if guys were in pads.
And as for your example, you might see Evans run maybe a 4.6 and Archer run a 4.5 in pads. Now the speed factor isn't a huge difference(Archer's still faster, but not a ton faster).

if peeps could just remember that Jerry Rice ran a 4.69!

I wouldn't be surprised if he ran faster in pads.
He was born to be a football player.

Measurables are gay.

A player's biggest disadvantage is where his talents aren't.

You record a 5.5 in all the 40's you never run.

You see it every year about these guys with potential because they have these great measurables but are raw with little football talent. Very few actually take their physical attributes and become great if they weren't good players before due to their football talent.
Graham is a good example of a guy that did and didn't reach his potential at the same time. He developed great as a receiver, but after 4 years he still can't block worth a damn.

The most recent example of a guy with good athletic ability who didn't pan out for me is Tez.
