I know there are a few posters on here that are very knowledgeable on AV systems, any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I hung a 65 inch samsung smart tv above the mantle Sunday and Im trying to figure out the best way to hook up the surround sound (Denon 1910) and the other inputs.
The way I originally installed it was to connect the components via hdmi into to the receiver and use HDMI out to the TV. My problem is if I do it this way, I can not get audo from the tv through the surround when I am using the tv's aps like Netflix or Hulu. Is there anyway to send it through the HDMI that is already connected? Or if I am totally retarded and hooked it up wrong please let me know that also.

Should I ask to move this to the OT?

Seems its plugged wrong. HDMI IN on receiver and into one of the HDMI outputs. Also, make sure your TV in the setup has an EXTERNAL OUTPUT and its on.
Also doesnt make sense that your not hearing TV apps through your receiver unless its somewhere in the app settings

Perfectly normal way to do it if the TV is simply a big "monitor"

No, the HDMI connection as you described is just bringing the video signal from the Denon to the TV. You're going to need a separate connection to bring the audio from the TV into the Denon and treat it like any of the other components you have hooked up.

Should I switch it to hook the components to the tv directly? That would mean running a few more cords thru the wall but I think it would give the tv more control to use all of its features.

If your TV and AVR both support ARC, yes. Just connect the HDMI cable to the TV input that is enabled for ARC, and do whatever TV and AVR setup is necessary. If ARC isn't supported, then you'll need to connect the TV's optical output to your receiver.
