I hate Las Vegas, but I still have a couple of bucket list things to do there

I hate the stereotypical Vegas. The strip bores me to death. Casinos aren't my thing. However, I love big shows like Cirque, so that's why I go.

Now I just want to fly into Vegas to use it as a departure point for places like Hoover Dam and adventure excursions outside the city.

I specifically want to go back to visit the Nevada National Security Site, the place north of Vegas where the government tested atomic weapons. You cannot just walk in for a casual tour. You must submit your name and information months in advance. They run a full background check on you and then decide whether or not to approve your tour. Essentially you have to get government clearance to visit the bomb range.

Finally, I want to drive to Pahrump and attempt to meet Art Bell for coffee at a dusty diner. That would be book worthy.

Those are my ideas on how to do Vegas right.

bullets and burgers FTW. Did this for my bachelor party and it was awesome. We were planning to take the helicopter to the range with a fly over of the grand canyon but we had one too many people.

Only thing that was ok was the raft ride that started at the bottom of the dam

I still find the damn amazing. Look up how the gov't displaced many people out of their homes to build it. At one point it was very hard to find information on that as it was suppressed.

The Origami class at the Henderson Senior Center is supposed to be fabulous. They have a certified Japanese Master Origamist, Ohmigod Noshito as the instructor. Possibly you could work this into your to-do list there too.

Maybe some ferrel ferret rescue too.

My friends and I have made it a tradition that's over 10 years old now. First weekend of March madness in Vegas is awesome, so much better than the super bowl.

I'm with you on that. Vegas has cheap airfares and rental cars and is a great place to kick off a road trip. Death Valley to Yosemite to Tahoe is good. Southern Utah is another. Joshua Tree/Palm Springs/San Diego is another. Lots of great terrain near Vegas.
