Why do teams perform so much better at home?

In each of the Heat vs Pacers games the home team has won. I've never understood how home field/court is so important, but it clearly is.

The effect is well documented in pretty much every sport known to man. Makes no sense to me, either. I'm not personally a strong believer in "intangibles", but most people apparently are.

Didn't do shite for me as a wrestler. There's no way to deny its effect as a whole, though. I actually have to believe that there must be some tangible benefit (like familiarity with a court or field) or an absence of travel fatigue.

I read about this in a study once and it comes down to the officials/refs...the home team gets the calls because of the crowd...human nature.

Not buying refs = home advantage. Refs favor good teams, and penalize bad teams everywhere. OP, think about cooking a meal in your kitchen vs a strangers. Where will you cook the better meal? And even a 6th grader who plays knows why. A smart one.

My neighbor where I grew up, who was like an older brother, told me that home field advantage was that the women at home knew all the right moves to make a player relax. Strange on the road was good, but they just didn't have the experience with the players that the home girls had.

94,000 people screaming at the top of their lungs when Alabama is trying to call audibles and get the snap off.

I played varsity baseball actually. I performed better on the road because I wanted them to lose more than I wanted to win. Something about wanting to see opposing fans disappointed really drove me. I expected a douchey comment, but that one was inaccurate and weak.

No, that's not the main factor. It can help, buy not the only thing
Anyone who's played sports in a high school level would understand. It's just the "comfort" feeling associated with playing in your own gym that you're used to.

I'm sure some people are like that. It affects team sports the most obviously. Not everyone will have the same mentality, so the other half the team could be the opposite and feel uncomfortable in a different place
Also affects communication. Fans screaming while trying to call an audible, shoot a free throw, etc
It's pretty easy to see why

Strange you say this considering the amount of times we've won in Tiger Stadium especially when you've been more successful against us on the road.
But to answer the OP, I think it has a lot to do with human nature and the mind game.

This is a dick useless response.
Specifically, is it crowd noise? That should matter most only in football, and then only in venues that are loud and packed.
Is it the traveling? Most high schools and even colleges aren't really that far from each other, but that's a legit reason.
Is it familiarity? Except for some baseball fields, fields/courts are all the exact same dimensions.
Is it the refs? With 2006 Auburn it was but otherwise I dunno.
