I hope more states start to follow this example and give a big middle finger to the federal government.
Barham needs a big raise.

Just hours after the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council approved an 11-day 2014 recreational red snapper season in federal waters Thursday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries secretary Robert Barham announced a year-round recreational red snapper catch in state waters.
quote:
“After reviewing what our biologists expect Louisiana’s recreational red snapper landings to be this year, and the recent action taken by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to have a very short federal season, I have decided to support our anglers and the associated fishing industry by opening state waters 365 days until further notice,” Barham said in a statement.
quote:
“The Gulf Council’s action is clear evidence that their process is broken, and they give no consideration to the needs of individual states. For two years, I have been trying to persuade the Gulf Council to move forward with regional management, allowing the (Gulf) states flexibility in management by empowering our anglers and fishing industry to decide how they want red snapper managed. That hasn’t happened.”
I hope more states start to follow this example and give a big middle finger to the federal government.
Barham needs a big raise.

Agreed. I wish Alabama would do this.

Thanks. I'm a landlubber so I'm not too savvy about the gulf regulations.

well it's not very clear on the enforcement side. I think the fed coast guard will enforce at 3 miles. State DWF will enforce at 10. Basically take your chances... not sure what the fines are and what the penalty will be for not paying a fed fine. Will the state honor fed enforcement to revoke your fishing license?

Think it changed from 3 back in 2012
eta:I don’t know if it was recognized by the Feds and if it wasn’t….. how active they police the waters outside of 3 miles

As of now la recognizes their state waters to be 9 nautical miles. That I the same amount given to both Texas and Florida. Prior to last year la only recognized state waters to 3 nautical miles.
The Feds however only recognize la state waters out to 3 nautical miles. So there are 6 nautical miles that is a huge gray area for anglers.
But assuming the weather holds for tomorrow, I plan on making my way to that glorious gray area and catch some of those prized snappers

Believe it or not, i advocated for expanding louisiana's state waters back when i was an 8th grader at the youth legislature. It's crazy to think that part of a bill i wrote for that actually ended up becoming law years later. I guess i was ahead of my time.

Would be useless in MS, you can wade that far out.

Wow...and hallejuhah! I've met Barham; comes off as a man who if he makes a stand...he don't back down. God bless him.
And in light of the current Nevada (States Rights) thing; his action is even more timely. The rank and file needs to stand behind this good man, and draw a line in the sand. Or China will end up catching our Snapper and Reds.
