Inspired by the "kids fishing pole" thread from a de days ago, I decided to try my hand at catfishing behind the house this afternoon. All my fishing equipment is at the camp except for my nephew's zebco. I bought a container of worms on the way home from work

I think I was spoiled by my first cast, walked away for 10 min and came back to a bent pole and a 2lb'er. After that I've had nothing but bait stealers. I have a bite every time but nothing gets hooked. The only hooks I had at my disposal today are 1/8oz jig heads. Is there a different hook that would be better?

Any other tight lining tips?

Pretty much ANY hook WOULD be.

I've caught quite a few using catfish hooks. Don't go too big though. I've found smaller hooks are easier for them to swalla.

Tie your line sort of like a Carolina rig. 1/4 to 1/2 oz bell lead weight. Have your catfish hook about 1 ft down from that.
I tie a knot about 2 1/2 feet up the line from the hook. And tie the weight to that loop. Makes sort of like a T. The weight sits on the bottom and the hook/bait free floating about a foot from the bottom.
That's for tight lining the river

Use night crawlers, patasa's (bream), small buffalo, cut bait, crawfish for blue cat and goo.

About 15-20lb mono line on a 7ft Ugly Stick with an original Ambassador 4400. Can't beat DAT

I like a three way swivel with about 18" of leader down to a bell weight, then 1-3ft of line depending on current off the swivel to a catfish hook with beef melt marinated overnight in garlic.

Reel/rod combo doesn't matter too much as long as you've got something stiff enough to handle it and strong braid.

I run a circle hook with cut bait or back or bream. I also use ambassador 6500 with a bait clicker and free line. I haven't tightlined for catfish in years.

I never had much luck with circle hooks for some reason. Switched to 3/0 bass worm hooks with the offset and never looked back, WAY more hookups.

Circle hooks and LOTS of beer.

I do my best fishing sitting on a 5 gallon bucket

Buckets definetely help. Also, try turning your reel upside down.

I use this set up as well. 40# braid with 20# mono leader. I use worms, catch some good channel cats, mostly bullheads, carp and drum. Use the rough fish for cut bait, best cut bait is fresh caught.

Not tight line, but caught these last couple weeks off the bank in swift water and let it drift with cut bait. Chicken livers work great for channels, but I hate messing with them.

Dip you some small crawfish out a road side ditch. Ideal size around 1 1/2" long.

Hook,3/0 or 4/0. Hook on bottom, weight about 18" up, make a loop in your main line about another 18" up from weight and add a second hook.

Hook crawfish thru the tail.
