I have a 12 year old 2.5 ton 10 SEER unit that is about to go.

Had Casteel come to my house today to quote me. For a 2.5 ton Trane 13 SEER and 95% variable speed furnace I was quoted $5100 for everything (install, parts, thermostat, etc). Is this a good deal?

Also do you think 13 seer units might be on sale later in the year as the 15 seer minimum mandate approaches in 2015

How long will you be in that house? If more than the next two or three years, then go as high of a SEER as you can afford.

That price for the 13 SEER unit is OK, get a smart thermostat like a Nest.

Buy the best A/C you can possibly afford. I went cheap a year ago when I replaced a 20 year-old unit with a new 15 SEER and regret it every time the power bill shows up. Get a smart thermostat too. I wish my system read and reacted to humidity as well as temperature, that's where you really get efficient.

Take a look at the Maytag units before you buy a Trane. Maytag has a 12 year parts warranty and you can buy a 12 year labor plan for about the same cost as a single service visit. The people I bought my house from had just had a new Maytag installed and purchased the labor plan. It has saved me over a thousand dollars in the 8 years I've had the house.

Not sure about duct work. They didn't mention it, but I am new to this. If the size of the system isn't changing, is that needed?

Any work on ducts would be extra in a retrofit. Drip pan too. A competent and honorable HVAC tech can look at your duct system and let you know if it needs remedial work done on it.

How so?

I'll be replacing a unit soon. I replaced my upstairs with a Trane a few years ago but I feel like my downstairs unit is on borrowed time. It's 20+ year old Lennox.

It has more to do with the insulation of your current duct work. It doesn't do much good to upgrade the energy efficiency of your AC unit if the existing duct work is insufficiently insulated.

If it is still running fine, by the homeowners warranty coverage. When it goes out, it is covered up to a certain dollar amount for replacement.

Might help you cover whatever costs you incur getting the new unit you want.

Sorry for the late reply. I've had several service calls over the 8 years I've had the house. Haven't had to pay a dime for any of them. Just sign the ticket. One was a seized fan. They replaced the entire unit at no charge.
