Cutting military pay and benefits raises morale

Who would have thunk it
Increases efficiency. The Marines have apparently been going soft. Obama needs to toughen them up with cuts in pay.

Cutting military pay and benefits is ok but cutting other benefits to other federal employees is not.
What is good for the goose...

Marines were also pretty efficient before they had a Sergeant Major of the USMC or all the services for that matter.

We live in fricking Opposite Land now.

I guess lowering unemployment benefits and welfare would accomplish the same thing......maybe a Democrat will now suggest it.

Marines are also psychopaths. I know this because I work beside them every damned day of the week. And I can tell you, listening to the Army enlisted personnel who I also work side by side with every day of the week, their morale - which is already low to begin with - would be shattered by this.

You can call the Marines psycopaths, but I think they are the only branch of the service that still fundamentally understands the purpose and underlying objective of their profession and the nature of War, on a very tribal level.
The Army has on some level become an industrialized machine for war that has embraced all the management/labor philosophies of late 20th century putting things such as pay, benefits, diversity, psychological wellness, and family before that of their mission.
And lets not even discuss the Air Force or Navy who have not really bled hard since World War II.
The SGM is looking at the Corps and he sees US Army.
---- And yes I know there are all sorts of elite exceptions in the the other services.

I can agree with everything you say, but the reason why the military is going soft is because the very nature of war has changed. Combat, as is defined in the present, is moving further and further away from the actual battlefield. The SGM is clinging to a past that the present day no longer supports.

Infantry combat is still pretty down and dirty.

But far less frequent than it was even in the Persian Gulf War.

In spite of their rep, Marines (O and E) are among the finest servicemembers I've ever worked with. They're by and large disciplined, mission focused, and their junior enlisted are easily the most respectful toward superiors.
To the OP, I believe the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps said cutting pay will increase [financial] discipline--not morale. Still don't buy that, but there's no need to distort the article.

Our benefits and raises have been much more carefully protected than govies and contractors. I don't think govies have gotten and annual raise since 2011. Ours don't amount to shite (about 1.0%) but it's still something.

Where'd you pick all this shite up. I'm a huge fan of the USMC, but give me a break. The percentage of US military members who have actually been in mortal danger (let alone under fire) is incredibly small as a proportion of the total force. That's the nature of the beast across all services today. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Where frick have you been the past dozen or so years. The battles fought in Iraq and Afghanistan were far more brutal than anything since Vietnam.
