Seems rational minds have a voice in Mississippi.

Mississippi has capped their total film industry welfare at $20 million---roughly 1/10th of what we give away--and the critics of the welfare are rightfully outraged.

quote:

“These type of taxpayer-funded privileges lead to a number of chain reactions in the economy,” Mitchell said. “They force everyone to pay higher taxes, because when a group seeks a privilege, it’s never the last time they ask for a privilege. They build a more sophisticated political arm designed to secure more privileges. It means capital flows to a politically connected few rather than the group that can pass the market test of satisfying demand at the lowest possible cost.”

quote:

But it hasn’t come cheaply.

Lousteau estimates the facility has received $8 million in upgrades since its opening and is costing taxpayers thousands of dollars in maintenance per month.

“I think these politicians just get stars in their eyes,” Lousteau said. “Most of that money goes out of state. If you go over to the studio, you’d see all of the tags from out of state. I love the movie industry and I wish it could be bigger in this state, but it just ain’t going to happen.”

I wish there was a watch dog group in Louisiana.

First comment under the article says it all

I live in Clarksdale, where several movies have been shot/partially shot. We desperately need the tourism and business here in the Delta. We have some of the lowest taxes in the country here. This city is dying from what it used to be in the 70s and 80s--or the 20s. I speak for a lot of people here when we welcome filmmakers to Clarksdale, which is known mostly for its support of blues music and the arts.

Just how much should the rest of the tax payers pay to help Clarksdale??

How much should you pay??

If you had a choice--and you do--how much would you donate to have a film shot in your town?

I would say 80 percent of clarksdales residents don't pay taxes. More than 20 percent work but most make so little they get a tax refund. If they're worried about the town they should get off their arse

Not only is this horse dead, he's decomposed, and through the years and years of heat and pressure, has been turned into coal.

Gosh wouldn't be great if they would stay without extorting $200 million in welfare every year from us???

Who wants an industry that admits if they don't get welfare they will leave your community??

When are they going to start enriching instead of taking???

Have you donated to any movie productions since you believe them so economically important?

Do you even know the amount of your taxes that go to film subsidies?
And don't give me this shite of "none should" bc then look at all the other shite you're "paying for" and get back to me.

You are anti tax, I get it, but grow up! Taxes are here, will stay here and some of them help the community.

I don't know. How much should you be taxed to give this away is the question? $1000, $10000??

You guys that advocate for this welfare owe the critics an idea as to just how much in your mind we should all pay for film subsidies.

I don't know how many jobs most people on welfare create. or how many tourists. Also most well fair doesn't require that you spend an x amount of money in the state.

Yes--about 9% of my income taxes. Yours too if you pay any.

But not film subsidies. Do we directly subsidize any other businesses you know of based on their daily operating expenses with cash out of our pockets??

I think we should take less from everyone. So i am not against tax credits to an industry. I am not against other businesses buying those credits and in turn getting a tax break themselves.

So it also benefits other businesses as well because they can buy tax credits for 90 cents not the dollar and get 10 percent off those taxes.

Freemen loves taxing businesses.
