Not really a surprise. Where does that line go - from the bus station to Civil District Court and back? Who exactly was the intended ridership? I bet the real answer is that they needed a streetcar you could see from the Superdome so they could get it in establishing shots for last years' Superbowl.

Maybe ridership will pick up once the "south market district" construction is complete but we will see. I still think a line running through Bywater to the St Bernard Parish line would've gotten more riders.

At least to the Industrial Canal. Tere are some Railroad ROWs on the other side of the canal that would pose a problem. The Bywater/Marigny line would see a lot of usage. The one on Loyola is a joke.

Still a lot of growth to come in that whole area.
I though a line was in the works to head into the marigny.

of course the streetcar is for tourists

if NOLA wanted a functional rail system they'd at least stop traffic for it like Houston's Metro.

Per the article, they blew all the St Claude money on the overbudget Loyola line.

expected to cost no more than the $45 million federal grant it received. But unforeseen obstructions underground had spiked that price to more than $60 million. The increase caused the RTA to pull money from its budget for a new line along St. Claude Avenue to plug the gap.

Problem is, designing stuff like this to be little more than a rolling contrivance, instead of with actual thoughts on how it's going to work into the transportation NEEDS of the city.

Hell, one running down Convention probably would have done better than this with all that foot traffic.

I couldn't figure out this line either when it was built, outside of the few Saints game being of any use. Hopefully it will succeed with further development on its corridor because I don't want to have to subsidize its losses (fat chance I know).

ETA: Would you necessarily get on the streetcar from South Market District to the FQ? Seems sort of going around your elbow to get to your arse from a tourist perspective looking at a map, maybe not for residents?
