Very disappointing to see a personal hero - a man who faced down actual discrimination to buy in and espouse this terrible rhetoric.

He's going to tow the party line.
He was a great baseball player but you shouldn't expect him to be part sociologist, part economist, part statistician, and part historian.
Pop culture stars should not be role models, and as a society we would do ourselves some good if we regarded their opinions on everything not related to their profession with the same weight that you would anyone else that is not an expert.

I thought about starting this thread. Aaron talks about his racist letters from fans when he was getting close to Ruth's record. Roger Maris got death threat letters also when he broke Ruth's single season record.
Some people get over personal injustices, and some are like Aaron who just let it fester in their craw. He's been this way forever.

As much as I appreciated Aaron as an outstanding player for the Braves, he's an idiot. Clearly he's trying to reconcile the failure of a half-black President by blaming Republicans, never mind the facts.

Lot of good insight here. But the problem is Hank Aaron isn't just a 'pop cultural star.' Faced racism head on and overcame it. And not some fake, drummed up racism. Real, life-threatening stuff.
So yeah, I disagree with his conclusion, but I don't dismiss him like I would Sean Penn or Justin Bieber.

Pretty much this. There are a few that only see Obama as a black President, and nothing beyond that. And there are less in the Republican party, than are supporters of him, that are this way.

This is true, but because Yankees fans are complete douches - they were fine if Mickey Mantle was going to break the record, but Maris was considered a "sub-par" Yankee.
What Aaron went through was a throwback, but it was, nonetheless racially charged. I don't think it represents opinions today - although Barry Bonds broke the record (and not McGwire, or other roided up white guy) - most true baseball fans consider Aaron the "true" homerun king - as do I.
Race has nothing to do with it - merit has everything.

My point being both got death threats for whatever reason... As you say, Maris got death threats from Yankee loons. Aaron got death threats from loons.
ETA: Wonder if Maris kept those death threats and kvetched over them for the rest of his life?

Most people recognize Aaron's total over Bonds for obvious reasons. To me Babe is still, and always will be, the home run king. Those 4,000 additional at bats helped hank a bit in surpassing Babe.

Not to derail the Aaron discussion, but . .
I agree with the "Yankees' fans are douches" part, but as I recall, the objection to Maris breaking the record was the new 162 game season as opposed to the old 156 game seasons when Ruth did it.

Certainly some of the opposition to Obama is related to race, but Aaron was wrong to impugn the motives of all Republicans. Whether we're talking about Blacks or Whites, Republicans or Democrats, Chrisitans or Muslims, etc., I think it's always wrong to lump all people of a group together, though many people on this board do it regularly to people who aren't White Conservative Chritians.

I've never bought into that logic. A career record is a career record. If Player A plays for 3 more years, he's going to get a lot more at bats than Player B.
We can do that with every single record.
