He had to put up with a lot of shite in his playing days, he had a right to be upset at people in the 60's and 70's. He's old and stuck in the past, his positions are understandable.

My sentiments exactly, Roger. I wouldn't "blame" a veteran who has PTSD for not wanting to leave his house just like I wouldn't tell anybody who suffered from a traumatic experience (assault, rape, lost of loved one, etc) that it was time to "get over it." Imagine a day in Hank's life back then, if this board was truly empathetic people wouldn't be "losing respect" for Hank just bc of these comments imo.

No excuse for generalizing though.

I'll give Aaron a pass. He actually lived through a whole lot of negative crap.

Maybe, doesn't excuse him for being a douche to nice people though, which he has been for decades.

He's just a disgruntled guy. Some of it I get, some of it I don't.

Well I've never met the guy so I can't comment on that. But if you think hes in the minority of athletes who act like douches to people, I think you are being naive. MJ is the perfect example.

He ran for President 3 times as a Dem, and when he ran as an Independent, he slewed the vote to Nixon. If he hadn't run, Hubert Humphrey would have won.

Oh really? So because I vehemently oppose Barrack Obama, it's ok to call me a racist? I'm just supposed to sit back and take it? Hank Aaron gets to accuse people who's biggest crime is voting GOP, of being in the Klan, and he gets a pass?

This, plus the Firefox thing, and other similar events are going to be the cause of a major Left Wing meltdown in November.

Amen. A couple of days ago I got into an argument with my aunt who made a couple of disparaging statements that started out with "the Republicans". I told her that by doing so, she was no better than folks who generalize about other groups of people.

Have you any response to my defense of your accusations against me in the other thread (Why Fight for Finland), or, are you simply a drive-by mud-slinger?

Meh - if Humphrey took every state Wallace did, he still loses the EC 301 to 237. Even as it was, Humphrey carried the biggest Southern state - Texas.

Where would his other 33 electors have come? Florida? I agree the popular vote was pretty tight - I think the people voting for Nixon - in many places, were voting against LBJ - by proxy. The Wallace votes would have split pretty evenly, in my opinion - his biggest impact was actually winning electors - electors that wouldn't have helped Humphrey in the first place.

Agreed.

I read a great story a few years back about Aaron's historic home run. He'd had death threats galore and really thought someone might try to kill him whenever he broke Ruth's record. His mom met him at home plate that night he hit the record-breaking home run. He said, "Mom, what are you doing here?" His mom replied, "They're gonna have to get through me to get to you."

Gotta love that.

Bonds broke the record (and not McGwire, or other roided up white guy) - most true baseball fans consider Aaron the "true" homerun king - as do I.

Bonds was also using roids, pal. Maris still holds the true HR record.

Very disappointing to see a personal hero - a man who faced down actual discrimination to buy in and espouse this terrible rhetoric.

Agreed.

He embarrassed himself and I'm not exactly what you would call a GOP supporter.

He doesn't know shite if he believes comparing GOP members to the Klan is fair.

It's despicable that he had to endure the kind of racism that he did. That behavior is a stain on our nation's history. But how in the frick does that completely excuse him from making such an absolutely ridiculous statement?

ETA-Not a Republican
