Stumbled across this earlier. It's from a documentary in the early 80s that talks about the history of New Orleans accents. Pretty good stuff.

I remember being amused by the first Yates accents I ran into at LSU. They probably had never heard anything like me, either.

Accents were a lot stronger back then than now with the younger generations. Girl at the beginning: "I grew up in dah Night Wode, Noht Rampawt neah da Bywadduh". Although I find a lot of Old Uptown families have different accents from the rest of Nola.

The older uptown gentleman they interview in the beginning sounds EXACTLY like my grandfather, who happens to be from Old Algiers.

Not NO, but in the 80's I knew people who'd spent their entire lives in BR but sounded like Valley girls

It's even worse now

Yeah, Baton Rouge seems to have some unexpected accents. I took some "What's your accent?" quiz and got standard American midland. I sound like I'm from nowhere in particular.

This might be hard to comprehend for some of you people, but there are posters that don't spend 24/7 on this board.
