Anesthesiology / Pain Management Job Market

Does anyone know if the Pain Management and/or Anesthesiology market in South LA is very saturated? I had originally planned to work in a rural area since they tend to get paid more (granted, I know the reason why), but after visiting New Orleans again last weekend, it made me want to practice in either New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or the surrounding areas. Does anyone here have any insight?
Even though, Wtodd wouldn't let me put him to sleep for his rotator cuff surgery.

How much does a pain doc make?

Median income seems to be about $450k - varying depending on region, though. Likely a little over $500k in the region that includes LA (though I don't have the numbers in front of me).

No fricking way. I knew it was high but had no idea it was that high. Now I'm jealous of my friend who's going back to school for three years for this (although there's no way in hell it'd interest me).
Why is the pay so extraordinarily high?

Yes. Plus Obamacare is killing the market.

Where is the line for those guys?
And OP I am not trying to jack with you?
I was just curious. Anesthesiology is a great specialty. Just wondered why that gap was bridged? I guess for all the blocks/ESI's. Must be hard to not "sell your soul" and just break out the RX pad?
Was already mentioned and is usually code for Scrip pad and pen "doin' work!"

It seems almost untapped to me. I work for a compounding pharmacy doing topical pain management creams and there are def docs out there, but not like I thought it would be. Def not over saturated. I call on BR, NOLA, and Houma.
Eta: when you decide to open your practice, we need to work together.

I think the OP is referring to an MD anesthesiologist. CRNAs don't make nearly as much, although they do very well from what I've heard.

I think some are confusing anesthesiologist with anesthetist.

Not for me. Granted, there will likely be a few patients that I'll "have" to see for medications only and no procedures, but I don't plan to be a narcotics based clinic, but very heavily procedure based.

Thanks. I've already contacted Ochsner and a couple other places, but I'm admittedly looking a little early. I won't start my pain fellowship until next (2015) summer.

Oh you can make as much money as you would like doing pain management if you are willing to be a little ummm.......liberal with your script writing.

Very cool. Def wish you good luck. If you're looking this early, then I'm sure you'll find something that you'll really like since you're not rushed.

I'm just going off the MGMA data that I've seen. Obviously that's not starting income. And obviously that's not the top of the line. Do you have a more accurate number?
