From other things I've read, there will be no growls on the album. It's not a metal album, but it is supposed to be quite a bit heavier than the last 2. Steven Wilson did the mixing, including a 5.1 version.

They said this album will sound like early 80s hard rock and will be a continuation of the sound on Heritage. I'm guessing it won't be very good.

'Heritage' was somewhat deliberately fricked up all over the place because I love fricked-up-all-over-the-place-type music, but I wanted to do something more melodic with this album, so there's stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall for this album. I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process, so at least I had a plan with this album, and I normally don't, to be honest."

I guess you could say it's similar to 'Heritage', but I'd like to think it's more hard rock and metal sounding

Hell I might have to check this out. I loved Damnation (no growls). The guy has a great voice and I'm not a huge fan of the growls. The music is so good though...

I thought Heritage was great! I have to be in the right mood to listen to it but it's still a great album. Can't wait for the new one.

Nepenthe is one of my favorite tracks Mikael has ever written. Axe's drumming is so wonderfully delicate on it.
ETA - I feel like I'm in the minority of Opeth fans that appreciates Storm Corrosion.

Exactly I've been trying to get into Opeth after a bud recommended them to me, but I can't get past the fricking growling. Too bad, cause I dig the music.

Same here, but I've grown to love them, growls and all. In every song that he growls, there is always a section when he sings clean. Always. And the music is so damn good; it's progressive metal at its finest. Give Ghost Reveries a try. I've found this to be a bit more 'digestible' for new listeners.
Can't wait for the new release.

I have it on blu-ray and have tried to like it but I just can't get that into it.

This is a great place to start. I define this album as beautifully brutal. The growls really work well in contrast with his singing voice.
