It will be introduced over the next 6-7 years in the fleets. An electrical operated rail gun that fires a projectile that flies at Mach 7 plus speeds and delivers one hell of a punch to whatever it is aimed at up to 150 miles. Yhe results on one test showed the results of one, It looked like holes in several half inch plates cut by a plasma torch for uniformity of cuts.

Yea if there is one thing our military needs is more weaponry.
I wonder how many billions were spent on this

You could get almost 300 of them for the same price as Obama's flight expenses for vacations in 2013.

You didn't click the link and watch the video, did you? Just knee-jerked another post onto the board.

Admiral says it costs one-one hundredth of the cost of the missiles currently being used. Sounds like its wise upgrade.

If I've got a choice between:
a) billions spent on bad-arse weapons that allow us to destroy our enemies
or
b) billions spent on food stamps that produces nothing more than people who do nothing except produce more people who want more food stamps
I'll take (a), please.

I remember doing a current event report on this in like sixth grade. Been waiting on them to finally make it viable to put into production and practice.

I got a chance to tour a facility on Eglin AFB back in 1979. It was like a 40'x40'x6000' building where they shot and photographed projectile trajectories. The day I was there, they shot a sabot-type projectile with fins out of a howitzer-like gun. In the first 50 feet, they would calculate the velocity, and that number would time about 150 cameras to take a still photo just as the projectile came abeam. Pretty cool stuff even though it was so "steam-driven." I can only imagine what they're doing today.

1.) This projectile looks like a "dumb" weapon. i.e. no guidance systems, etc., like an artillery shell.
2.) Is this a kinetic energy weapon or does it contain an explosive charge?
3.) If this is a simple kinetic energy weapon with no guidance system, why does it cost $25,000 a pop?

The link says it has an "electronic guidance system." Not sure what that means. I'd guess it can do inflight corrections.

I believe they're using this technology on the new Ford-Class Carriers catapult launch system

How on Earth can you be so stupid? Watch the video. It has tracking to shoot moving targets (like a warhead moving toward the US)
And, ps, they aren't gonna tell dumb people ALL of it's capabilities..I would hope even you could understand that principle.
