First off, let me start by saying I do think Cal is 1 of the best coaches in the country. A lot of people on here are calling him the GOAT already. Do I think that he Is the the best in the country right now? No. But hes def 1 of the top coaches in the country. Its clear cut that he is the best recruiter though. No doubt about that.

But I do think he is in a cant lose situation. What i mean by that is: If they win it all, Cal is the GOAT because he won with freshman. If they lose, its because they are freshman and not Cals fault. It seems like if they win its because of Cal, if they lose its because they are freshman. The coach gets the credit if they win, the players get the credit if they lose.

And I get that they are freshman players. But these kids arent normal freshman. They are about to be in the NBA. A few of them will be lottery picks. This is a freakishly talented team, regardless of their age.

Does that bother anyone else but me? And dont get me wrong, Cal has done a damn good job coaching this team up and getting them to play as a single unit. But talent wise, this UK team is 1 of the best in the country. 5 1st rounders, Randle, Harrison Twins, Cauley Stein, and Young. And a few will be lottery players. And some other solid prospects on the bench like Poythress. I dont think any other team in the country has that type of talent on its team. But if they win, its because of Cal. If they lose, its because they are freshman and not Cals fault, regardless of how much talent this team has.

Edit: And Im not just talking about this game or this year. Just how people perceive Cal in general.

It would mean Ollie out coached him. Which isn't hard. JJ out coached him once.

I think people already view him as the best recruiter ever but not very good X's and O's. But really good at timely time outs and motivation.

cal has had that mastered for a while now and it's annoyingly genius. he calls his team uncoachable and all this other shite and then when he wins with him, it's "how did he do that? he didnt even think they were coachable!!!"

there have been games this year and in the past where he comes out and says they are gonna lose. "we aren't ready" or something very similar. it's a great tactic because idiots fall for it, but id rather have my coach not participate in that petty shite.

Yea I remember when hes done stuff like that the past 2 seasons. Individually, its great for him because if they lose its not on him and if they win its all because of him. Kinda throws the players under the bus and they dont get the credit they deserve. While Cal gets credit for stuff he may not deserve. Not saying hes not a great coach. But the year they won it all, that team was by far the best team in the country. And this year, roster wise, UK is the most talented team in the country. But if they win, Cal is the GOAT. If they lose, its because they are freshman.

I think we underestimate the difficulty of getting 5 super talented freshmen to all play together as a team. Yeah, they have freakish talent, and that's extremely important. But it isn't everything.

Best move Cal made all season was coming up with the idea of the tweak and talking about how he coached these guys wrong all season. He took the pressure off these kids and said it was his fault they weren't as good as they should have been.

Does he reap the rewards if they win? Sure, but that is just how college basketball is.

Check out this article about Cal and his relationship with his players: LINK

Honesty. It sounds like a forgettable cliche coming from the mouth of a teenager, but it's deeper and more meaningful than it appears. Calipari tells his recruits if they work hard and succeed at Kentucky, it's not going to take very long for them to become incomprehensibly rich. That openness has gone a long way towards making Kentucky the most powerful program in college basketball.

On my list of wants for a coach, x's and o's are the last thing. Recruiting ability, game management and motivation are what wins games and championships.

I didnt say Cal isnt a great coach or whatever. Hes done a great job this year.

But in sports at the college and pro level, talent is a huge part of it. And , regardless of age, its easier to coach a team loaded with talent than coach a team that isnt as talented like a Butler, Wisconsin, etc. Sure, you have to coach it a bit differently and slowly bring the players along and all that. But coaching a team loaded with talent gives you a huge advantage over your opponent, before you even get down to coaching.

And if it wasnt for the rule forcing players to go to college, some of these guys would already be in the pros.
