Crazy. Love this movie.

Here's a link to a yahoo Big League Stew article on 15 things you may not have known about the movie.

Pretty interesting stuff. My favorite:

quote:

1. CHARLIE SHEEN SAYS HE TOOK STEROIDS TO PREPARE FOR HIS PART
Charlie Sheen didn’t have the Hollywood bad-boy rep back in 1989 that he does now, but he was still very much Charlie Sheen back then. Back in 2011, Sheen confessed to Sports Illustrated that he took steroids for six to eight weeks to prepare for his role as Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn.

Ward says today that he doesn’t know whether that’s true, but Sheen was throwing in the mid-80s while filming the movie.

“I have no freaking idea,” Ward says. “I didn’t even know what steroids were. You have to remember this was 1989. Even if he told me he was doing steroids, I would’ve said, ‘What’s that?’ He was pretty ripped at the time, but I figured he was a young man working out.”

Of course he did. Crazy bastard.

Which begs the question, what is the best baseball movie ever?

Field of Dreams?
The Natural?
Bull Durham?
The Pride of the Yankees?

Would be my choice, because it is a great movie, that just happens to be about baseball.

I didn't see Field of Dreams until recently, and was better than I thought it would be. Doesn't unseat Bull Durham, though.

Pride of the Yankees is a classic, probably my #2 baseball movie.

I've never been sold on The Natural - it's okay, but I'm not sure it deserves to be on this list.

A League of Their Own belongs on a list like this.

Major League is still one of the best comedies to come out of the 80s. And a great baseball movie to boot.

I agree - it is underrated. Bull Durham is my go to baseball movie, and I like others mentioned as well, but, for example, over "Rookie of the Year" or "The Natural", I take Major League every time - over all the Bad News Bears sequels/reboots, etc. (everything but the original - another classic) as well.

I love it because you can tell that the actors (except Snipes) actually played baseball and care about the game and gave a shite about making it look real. That's why I like Costner in the baseball movies. He knows how to play and looks like he does. He clearly loves the game and wants it to look authentic.

I hate watching Thomas Ian Nicholas try to pitch in Rookie of the Year. He looks mildly retarded. The most natural looking pitch he throws is the goddamn underhand lob at the end of the game. I can actually see him being able to do that.

Major Leauge II (only one we had on VHS), ROTY and Little Big League were staples of my childhood. Especially on long road trips. We had a TINY tv in our pop-top van. It couldn't have been more than 8 inches.

Not to diverge too wildly, but in Deep Space 9, the crew plays baseball against a crew of Vulcans. Cast member Max Grodenchik played a character named Rom, who was supposed to be the team's worst player - but was a semi-pro out of high school, and ended up choosing acting over a career in baseball. He was incapable of playing as badly as his character was supposed to, convincingly - so, they made him play lefty. (He still didn't look terrible.)

It's my favorite. I've also been told by ball players that it's spot on for it's portrayal of minor league ball.

The Sandlot is my other. It gets what baseball is all about.

Best baseball movie by far IMO. And there are some good ones listed in this thread, but Sandlot is that good for me.

We won a game today. If we win tomorrow, thats called 'two in a row.' If we win the next day, thats called a 'winning streak.' It has happened before.

Lou's entire exchange with the pitching coach after Vaughn gets lit up by the Yankees. "You want me to go get him?" "Naw, Lets see how he reacts." Vaughn plunks the next guy, gets ejected. "I think you can go get him now."
